As most of our community is aware, gasoline supply has been temporarily interrupted on the East Coast states due to a cyber ransomware attack on the Colonial Pipeline business computer network. The attack has not extended to the transmission network however that system was shut down as part of the response process. Colonial Pipeline has been manually bringing the system on-line again today and as of this post anticipates normal operation by the weekend. Emergency Management i...s aware of gasoline hoarding at our local gas stations, with individual purchases in excess of $300.00 today. We are asking our community to not panic-buy fuel, and use only what you need. Other people need this fuel to go to work and other necessary travel. Our fuels stocks are limited because we are a rural community. A greater danger and threat exists however, as the possibility now exists for improper gasoline home storage issues which can lead to explosive and rapid fire spread. If you are storing large amounts of gasoline, please use approved containers ONLY. Also, do not store the gasoline in basements or garages where vapor can build up to flammable limits and ignite. Separate containers. Be aware as the temperatures increase this Spring and Summer that vaporization will increase and begin to vent, increasing the hazard even more. While we encourage being prepared in foodstocks, medicines, and supplies for disasters, we do not encourage hoarding and bulk storage of gasoline. See more

Disaster. What happens when local Emergency Management needs- well, rescued? This afternoon, our Emergency Management Office, Training Center, and EOC were flooded as a result of a sewage backup in the street main pipe. Sanitary wipes, combined with a tee shirt (can't make this up), blocked the sewage main on West Wiconisco Street in Muir and we were the first to get the damage. Water entered the EMA building across the entire floor causing heavy odor. Fortunately, the drywa...ll was spared as well as the most of the floor because we caught it early enough, by going in this afternoon as a result of the wind event. While some items were damaged, no major equipment was lost. We should be back in full operational status in a week or so. Special thanks to the Muir Fire Company (Station 1) for your immediate response and help throughout the evening as well as the quick work of the Porter Tower Sewer Authority. Thanks also to our Supervisors and the awesome work of Serve Pro. Fortunately, no other homes were affected as they were able to get the blockage out relatively fast. What a mess. See more
