THIS DAY IN LANSFORD HISTORY-JANUARY 9, 1953 EXPLOSION IN LEGION POWER ROOM CAUSES DAMAGE An accumulation of gas in the emergency power room of the American Leg...ion Post caused damage to the building. The explosion shattered windows, blew open doors, and caused a fire in the building. Thomas Chapman, cashier at the Dime Bank next door, felt the blast and investigated. Joseph McHugh, Lawrence Furey, and James Murphy, post office employees, used a fire extinguisher to control a fire until emergency personnel arrived. Fire Chief Norman Tippett said the emergency lighting is operated by gas and batteries. Power was cut off several times overnight due to an ice storm.
