On D-Day, 6 June 1944, Allied forces launched a combined naval, air and land assault on Nazi-occupied France, changing the course of history. But - a day earlier, 77 years ago, one of the most important weather forecasts in history was made. Group Capt. James Martin Stagg defied his colleagues and advised Eisenhower to postpone the invasion of Normandy by one day (from June 5 to June 6) because of uncertain weather conditions.... Had they attacked June 5, bad weather would have jeopardized the entire operation, and quite possibly, the entire war. Want to learn more about D-Day? On this day in 1804, the Lewis and Clark expedition leaves St. Louis, Missouri, on a mission to explore the Northwest from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. This journey ended up lasting almost 2 years, and brought back a wealth of information about the largely unexplored [by the US] region, as well as U.S. claims to Oregon Territory.
