FROM THE GALLERY STORE: Daniel W. Coburn’s (92nd ANNUAL Solo Exhibition Winner) monograph, The Hereditary Estate, was published in 2014. The book is a conceptual work of art as well as a retrospective look at a decade of his practice. Coburn investigates the family photo album and uses its visual infrastructure as a metaphor for the flawed ideology of the American Dream. Frustrated by the lack of images that document the true and sometimes troubling nature of his own family h...istory, the photographer set out to create a new kind of archive, a potent supplement to the broken albums that exists in the collections of many families. Daniel W. Coburn, The Hereditary Estate, 2014, hardcover book with Swiss binding, 11 1/2" x 9", 112 pages, 76 duotone illustrations, published by Kehrer Verlag, $55 https://printcenterstore.myshopify.com//the-hereditary-est #ThePrintCenter #printmaking #photography #VisitPhilly #phlarts #ContemporaryArts #onlineshop #onlineshopping #artcollector #artgallery #originalartwork #instaartwork #instaartist #photobook #photobooks

The third section of (Un)Making Monuments Making Presence opens today! The virtual exhibition explores how history is marked and mediated through photographic representations of power in public spaces. The exhibition features the work of Margaret Bourke-White, Oliver Curtis, Nona Faustine, Lee Friedlander, An-My Le, Michael Mergen, Joiri Minaya, Mike Osborne, Kaitlin Pomerantz, Matthew Shain, William Earle Williams and Marisa Williamson. The final section, Making Space, ...will be released next Wednesday and will be on view through December 30, 2020. In Making Presence, the figure is central in the works of Nona Faustine, Joiri Minaya and Marisa Williamson. Their direct and indirect interventions into the landscape deconstruct the fraught politics of representation in monumental forms. By critically examining who is depicted, the artists highlight who is omitted. Their works present viewers with alternative perspectives on some of the most famous monuments in the United States from New York’s Statue of Liberty and Christopher Columbus statue to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. and the many statues of Thomas Jefferson in Charlottesville, VA. http://printcenter.org/unmakingmonuments/ Please visit our website for more details, information and related programs. http://printcenter.org/100/ Image one: Nona Faustine, Fragment of Evidence, 2019, from the series My Country, Screenprint, 40 x 60, Edition of 20. Now on View! Roxana Azar’s installation for Windows on Latimer site-specific commissions by Philadelphia artists for our iconic bay window! Come by to see Projections during the month of October. Azar’s photo-based, sculptural work is grounded in an exploration of shape, color and light. To achieve an iridescent glow, Azar uses a NASA-engineered material invented in the 1950's, which now has both scientific and decorative applications. The work changes with the time of da...y and position from which it is viewed. Tag #WindowsOnLatimer to share your experience! Cynthia Back’s (Lansdowne, PA) work explores issues of suburban sprawl, the subsequent destruction of habitats, farms and forests and the homogenization of suburban environments. Working primarily in woodcut and reduction woodcut, she achieves intense color and a strong sense of texture, bridging the observational and the abstract. This work features a view of sprawling urban development in the Andes, as buildings climb the steep slopes of a nearby mountain seemingly in defia...nce of the terrain. This work and more by Back are available today in The Gallery Store.
