This weekend we were busy! PSL members went out with neighbors in East Mt. Airy on a walking tour of the rapid and destructive gentrification taking place in East Mt Airy, discussing the details of each site. We have to work together to save our neighborhoods! The Unity and Survival Program continued our weekly deliveries of free food. PSL members, Liberation Center volunteers, and community members unloaded and delivered food in Kensington, Nicetown, Elmwood, and Grays Ferr...y this week. Hundreds of families were helped out! And in Germantown we helped flyer for a Philly middle school student group. There’s a student-led community gathering on June 12 that’s raising awareness and community empowerment around the increasing gun violence young people experience in Philly. Everyone deserves to live in peace and with dignity! Last photo: two of our Nicetown US Program volunteers! Interested in volunteering? DM us!

On Monday, May 31st, PSL comrades joined in the commemoration of the one year anniversary of police attacks on 52nd St. and I-676 at Malcolm X Park with art, advocacy and action. Comrades Christina Jackson and Adiah Hicks were on the organizing committee with Amelia Carter and members of Spirits Up, Black Philly Radical Collective, Black Lives Matter Philly, Penn Community for Justice Drexel’s Community Lawyering Clinic and ACLU PA appealed to the United Nation to get police ...conduct last summer recognized as a violation of human rights as they shot rubber bullets at Philadelphia residents. The appeal worked and the United Nations issued a letter to Philadelphia stating they would like to initiate an investigation. The protest, participatory art installation, yoga, meditation and teach-in put pressure on the city to allow for the investigation. This event brought together community members to advocate and discuss the impact of state violence on Philly, and in particular, West Philly. For more info about the June 3rd human rights panel to discuss the appeal further, see: https://fb.me/e/2bEFYuXqR

On January 29th, 2021 the Garden Court Eatery and the owner of their building met in zoom court to address allegations the owner claimed were grounds for the termination of the lease. Many members of the neighborhood were in attendance to show their support for this small deli, an establishment that has been in the community for 17 years. The judge recognized that there was not sufficient evidence to justify a breach of the lease and dismissed the case! At this time, the Song Family will be staying at 4725 Pine Street as The Garden Court Eatery. This victory was a true show of people power - the community came together to fight against gentrifying forces and support their neighbors. Thank you- The people united will never be defeated!

On Monday, educators across Philadelphia braved the cold, demanding safe building conditions so that they could return to the classroom. They taught classes outside their schools and spoke to Philly Liberation Center volunteers about their grievances and demands. Solidarity to all Philly educators fighting for a safer city!

Yesterday, educators across Philly set up virtual classrooms in schoolyards, parking lots, and various locations to take a stand against the School District of Philadelphia’s unsafe school building reopening plan. One educator featured in this video expressed that the teachers' refusal to enter the building is not because they don't want to teach, but that they do not want to be "sacrificial lambs," and will not accept unsafe conditions! #NotUntilItsSafe

Despite below-freezing temperatures, educators across the city set up their virtual classrooms in schoolyards, parking lots, sidewalks, and cars to take a stand against the School District of Philadelphia’s unsafe school building reopening plan. The demands are clear: Schools will remain virtual until there are vaccinations, proper ventilation, and an adequate vision for safe building conditions for all students and staff in every school. Teachers chanted not until it’s saf...e! with signs condemning the school district’s insulting attempt to solve the ventilation issues with household fans. While the City of Philadelphia and the federal government fail to efficiently distribute the COVID vaccine, and the school district rolls out an inadequate reopening plan in poorly ventilated, asbestos-ridden school buildings, educators continue to show the district that they won’t return to these buildings until it’s safe for everyone. The Party for Socialism and Liberation stands in solidarity with all workers in the struggle for safe schools! Join faculty and community members TODAY at 4pm at 440 N Broad St to stand with Philly educators as they demand a safe reopening! #NotUntilItsSafe
