The Cody Rouge & Warrendale Neighborhood Framework #designbuild team finished their workshop tables and so much more this week!

It works!! First scooter prototype complete, as the team begins to develop tools for exploring the neighborhood and issues of teen mobility in Cody Rouge Warrendale. Also wrapped up all of the work tables; finished more stools; started identifying and prototyping around small design needs in their homes, like lighting and desks to start to talk about the possibilities of design entrepreneurship in the team’s everyday lives; and added a basketball hoop to the workshop as they work to make the space their own. Folding chairs for the @codyrougeandwarrendaleplan #workshop and teen #hangout spot? Nope, not when you can make your own super comfy chair, learn some new skills in the process, eventually have a new chair for your home at the end of the workshop and talk about #design on a very personal level before moving to the scale of the neighborhood. Love the team’s backrest innovation, that’s a new one. Excited to see how these evolve today and more excited reactions of passers by to...day. Yesterday that included the superintendent of a collection of charter schools that has a branch in the building, who specifically came by to see the chairs, teens and talk about both community #designbuild commissions for the #teens and incorporating programming like this into her curriculum. For a few hours a couple of Saturday’s ago there was a teen built #treehouse on Joy Rd. at the @joysouthfieldcdc farmer’s market lot in the midst of the community #picnictable build. Was building #play any less important than creating lasting improvements to neighborhood spaces? ‘I am going to sign up for a construction class. Despite blazing heat, it was nearly impossible to get participants to stop building. #tbt to the community picnic table and #popup #playground build we led a few Saturdays ago in #detroit as a part of the @codyrougeandwarrendaleplan with @hectorurbandesign . Each picnic table that stakeholders built go to a small public space that they are working to activate in their neighborhood. A huge thanks to the community orgs, city staff, volunteers, @brightmoormakerspace / @sunbridgecollaborative / @nicktobier , @ordinaryclothingbrand + @shays_woodcraft and @sitonitdetroit , who made the wonderful event possible. It was truly a team effort from the community meal to tool use to extensive material prep to outreach. We took a short break today in the midst of prepping for the @codyrougeandwarrendaleplan community build to lead a team from the @detboxinggym in a quick series of building challenges after they finished their tables with @brightmoormakerspace . Needless to say, the @detboxinggym team, @sitonitdetroit and @sam_albaugh rocked it, although it remains somewhat debatable as to who wonthe final combined structure was cooler anyway. Happy birthday to Shay! She is one of the original founders of the @brightmoormakerspace , starting in 2011 as a teen and is now one of the amazing key leaders in the space. She also happens to have kicked butt all week, even making a surprise appearance todayon her birthdayto help make sure materials are meticulously cut, sanded and painted for the @codyrougeandwarrendaleplan community build tomorrow. She ALSO happens to have her own custom sign business @shays_woodcraft making custom signs for businesses, orgs, block clubs , etc. with her friend and co-leader in the space, Tanay. Need a sign?
