Known for her glamour, charm, and masterful guitar playing, Sister Rosetta Thorpe was a gospel singer who rose to fame in the 1930s and 40s. She played to crowds at the Cotton Club, and the Apollo, jammed on stage with Duke Ellington, and garnered a slew of fans across the country. Music legends like Johnny Cash, and Bob Dylan praised Tharpe for her musical prowess and frightening skill with the guitar. Still, it wasn’t until 2018 that Tharpe began getting her due respect for her immense contributions to American music when she was finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #pennwoodproud

While Rosa Parks’ brave refusal to give up her bus seat is common knowledge, many people don’t realize that Parks was not the first to refuse. At 15 years old, Claudette Colvin simply chose not to sit in the back of the bus, and she even cited her constitutional rights when it was demanded that she move. Colvin was arrested and became the first woman detained for her resistance to racism and oppression. Her story is lessor known, but no less impressive. #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth #pennwoodproud

Bass Reeves (1838-1910) was a true American cowboy and hero of the Old West. As the first black deputy US Marshal west of the Mississippi River, Reeves arrested over 3,000 dangerous criminals, and was the inspiration for the famous Lone Ranger comics, television series, and radio program. #blackhistorymonth #pennwoodproud

At six years old, Ruby Bridges became the first black child to integrate an all-white Southern public school. Her father, concerned for his daughter’s safety, was initially against the idea; however, her mother knew that this would be a pivotal moment for the Civil Rights movement. In November of 1960, escorted by her mother and US Marshals, Ruby carried her books past an angry mob, and into William Frantz Elementary School (as well as the History books). Today, Ruby remains a fighter for Civil Rights, and continues her heroic legacy as an American icon. #blackhistorymonth #pennwoodproud #americanicons
