Pittsburgh Youth Ballet Company & School

Thirty-six years ago, Jean Gedeon founded Pittsburgh Youth Ballet. Since then, PYB has built a reputation for excellence in ballet. PYB has trained many dancers who have gone on to pursue professional careers in dance. PYB has trained and employed teachers who have moved on to open their own dance schools and/or join the teaching staff of ballet schools with some of the top training programs in the country. PYB has a legacy of instilling confidence, competence, self-disciplin...e, and self-motivation for over a generation of young people. Indeed, PYB’s students have gone on to use these invaluable life skills to handle the challenges of many different career and life paths far from the dance studio. Last year, Pittsburgh Youth Ballet's founding artistic director, Jean Gedeon, stepped aside. At that time, PYB’s Board of Directors stepped in to handle ongoing operations as they began searching for a new Artistic Director who would continue the work and mission with which the organization of PYB was originally created to support. While teaching at PYB, long time faculty member of PYB, Alan Obuzor, started a professional contemporary dance company, Texture Contemporary Ballet. Ever since Texture was founded in 2011, one of the artistic goals and visions was that there would one day be an official school associated with the professional company. Texture and PYB’s goals and needs lining up with each other has led to the perfect environment for the birth of Texture Ballet School. Texture Ballet School will continue PYB’s history of enriching children’s lives through the art and discipline of ballet, while also forwarding Texture’s mission of enriching people’s lives by inspiring passion, encouraging exploration, and cultivating an appreciation for art and collaboration. We are pleased to announce that Alan Obuzor will be the Artistic Director of Texture Ballet School. Alan has been the founding and Artistic Director of Texture Contemporary Ballet for the past 8 years. He has been a professional dancer based out of Pittsburgh for 19 years, he has 17 years of teaching experience, and has been a faculty member at PYB for the past 7 years. The PYBCO school and non-profit organization will sunset as Texture Ballet School takes flight. Registration is open, classes will be continuing! All of us here at PYB are beyond excited to see that the exceptional legacy established by PYB will be continuing and evolving under the direction of Alan Obuzor!
