Our hearts break as we mourn the police killing of Walter Wallace Jr. of West Philadelphia. Mr. Wallace was killed in the neighborhood where RTP has repaired homes for the past 3 years with our amazing partner ACHIEVEability. We reiterate and amend our statement from earlier this year: Rebuilding Together Philadelphia is heartbroken by the recent killings of Walter Wallace, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. We recognize the many other Black and Brown people wh...o have been killed, hurt, falsely accused, profiled, incarcerated, and treated unfairly because of racism, especially in our criminal justice system. RTP stands in opposition to the pervasive, systemic racism that informs the policies that shape our lives. Yet we take hope from the many thousands across the country taking action against racism and white supremacy -- and we demand safety for those protestors. RTP has reached out to all our community partners to say: we hear you, we support you, and how can we help rebuild? Racist actions and attitudes are constant threats to People of Color including the homeowners we serve, as well as our team members, Board members and community partners. We are already working to make RTP not just a diverse and inclusive organization, but an anti-racist one. Rebuilding Together Philadelphia looks forward to doing this, the way we always do, together.

This past weekend, RTP staff and 31 [Re]Builders constructed and installed six raised beds in the Viola Street Community Garden, one of the oldest community gardens in Philadelphia. Volunteers helped make this vibrant greenspace more accessible for seniors on the block. #violastreetgarden is one of the oldest community gardens in Philadelphia. These gardeners have been growing food for themselves and their neighbors for 40 years, says neighbor and fellow gardener Mandy Katz.
