Founded in 1976, as part of Penn State University, The Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center is a resource for the university and the community at large, providing a variety of unique teaching and learning opportunities for students and educators. The facility includes an Environmental Center, an Outdoor School, and Team Development Center. There is also a Raptor Aviary on the site, which is home to a variety of hawks, owls, eagles, vultures, and falcons. The 7,000-acre propert...y includes a 72-acre lake and is located only 12 miles from Penn State’s University Park campus. Over the past 4 years, the center has undergone a complete overhaul through a transformational project which includes several new buildings, additions, and renovations. A new 10,000 square foot main building and approximately 4,000gsf of additions including updated finishes, office reconfiguration, and demolition of an existing kitchen and mechanical systems. The main building includes new classrooms, conference rooms, work areas, restrooms storage and mechanical systems. A Classroom Pavilion was constructed to the western side of the site which will help to define a new gateway to the complex. Upgrades and the expansion of the raptor center was completed in a second phase. Site improvements include ADA entry to the Main Building, outdoor teaching spaces, a reconfigured service yard and an on-site sewer treatment facility. The building will be LEED certified. The design of the center features custom-designed heavy timber elements. In some portions of the project, on-site timber was harvested and utilized in the construction as well. Reuther+Bowen was the structural engineer for the project as part of the design team led architect Kimmel+Bogrette.
