30 years and 3 months ago we hit a milestone in science and one of my medical dreams became reality. It set in place a now common practice. Thousands upon thousands of surgeries increasing quality of life have been done for countless souls. We keep making progress. Progress cant be made without risk. #medicine #doctors #totalknee

Over the decades that I've been an orthopedic oncologist, I have been so blessed to be part of giving thousands of patients an unquanitifable amount of added years and an increased quality of life. But we can all make a difference and saving just one life can change the world or at least the world for that one life. As I'm driving from the hospital there was a truck in front of me swerving, then swerving erratically, and then it was clear this was going to end horribly. As we... were on the phone with 9-1-1, My wife and I began to contemplate how we would respond once it went from bad to ugly and what would transpire. We've responded to mid-air emergencies and had our fair share of being coincidentally first reponders, but our minds wandered and wondered would we be witness to the moments that caused so many of the bone harvests for organ donations we had done over the years? After 20 nail biting minutes, the police came in behind us and we too pulled over to watch the driver being pulled from his truck and thrown into handcuffs (and his dog safefully taken away). I feel the need to express that we all have a duty to look out for one another and it extends way beyond scrubbing in and doesnt end when we scrub out. I took part in that driver's arrest, just like I have to make difficult recommendations and decisions when entrusted for someone's care. But ignoring that driver was not an option. Im sure I'm not the only driver that called, but I'm scared by the thought that many didn't. Just a reminder: all lives are precious and we all have a duty to look out for one another, including the puppy in that crazy driver's passenger seat or the unknown person(s) that lived because that man was taken off the road. Sometimes doing the right thing doesnt require med school, just the simple act of a phone call. #thinblueline #thankacop #goodnews #dogooder #seesomethingsaysomething
