LATE POST #wellnessthursdays Many of us often hear about gum disease. We know it is related to inflammation of gums. However, why it happens, what causes it and what are the consequences are not known to everyone.... Gum disease is described as swelling, soreness or infection of the tissues supporting the teeth. There are two main forms of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontal disease. Gingivitis - means ‘inflammation of the gums'. This is when the gums around the teeth become very red and swollen. Often the swollen gums bleed when they are brushed during cleaning. If gingivitis is not addressed on a timely fashion it turns into periodontal disease or AKA periodontitis. Periodontitis is inflammation and subsequent loss of tooth supporting tissue, more specifically gums and underlying bone. As the disease progresses dues to loss of supporting soft and hard tissue teeth are lost. What causes gingivitis and periodontitis one can ask. Just like cavities, they are caused by specific bacteria types overpopulating gum tissue accompanied by body's response. Human body is very adaptive to various stressors. Gum disease is one of the demonstrations of such adaptation. As the disease progresses and not addressed, body responds to it by inflammation first and then by reducing the tissue from the area of impact. How can we fight it? Although partially some people have genetic predisposition to gum disease, it is mostly caused by lifestyle choices and oral hygiene habits. While poor oral hygiene is a prime cause habits such as smoking and chronic conditions such as diabetes can affect gum's ability to heal. Next time you are at Richboro Dental Excellence ask our team about gum disease and ways to fight it so your smile stays bright and long lasting. #gumdisease #gingivitis #periodontaldisease #periodontitis #oralhygiene

LATE POST #toothbrushtuesdays When it comes to maintaining good oral hygiene, there are many steps and processes you can use to do so; flossing, mouthwash, specialized diet, etc. However, one of the most effective, and widely used methods for ensuring high quality oral hygiene is brushing.... There are many different types of brushing depending on the area of focus. Let us briefly discuss some of those. Stillman’s Brushing Method. With this method the aim is to remove plaque from above the gum line, and is also good for patients with gingivitis. Bass (Sulcular) Brushing Method. The aim with this method is to remove plaque from below the gum line and is the preferred method for patients with periodontitis. **The Stillman and Bass methods can be ‘modified’ by gently sweeping bristles away from the gums. ** Charter’s Brushing Method. Best for people with orthodontic braces. Circular Brushing Method. This is the one we were all taught as children, and definitely one of the most used methods. Even given the extra benefits all the above methods provide, it is still recommended that you continue to brush the chewing surfaces, as well as the back of the bottom and front teeth, and tongue, by lightly scrubbing up and down. Also, remember to use a soft bristled brush. Next time you are at Richboro Dental Excellence ask our hygienist about those techniques and they will be happy to educate you on it. #toothbrush #brush #oralhygiene #dentalhealth #wellbeing #richborodentalexcellence #rdeblog

#knowledgesaturdays In short dental fillings are as the name suggests "filling" materials that replace missing tooth structure. Usually once dentist removes the decayed tooth structure in your dental appointment he or she fills it with special materials to restore function and form of your teeth. Collectively those various materials are called fillings among general public. Dental fillings can vary based on the material used and the size of the missing tooth structure. Most c...ommonly used restorative dental filling material is resin composite that is color of the tooth and easy to work with. Another form that is popularly called silver fillings are the metal fillings that are relatively dated and although pretty durable not so desired amongst patients due to looks of it. Resin composite fillings are used often due to their versatility. One of such advantages is the esthetics - resin composite can be matched to the color of the tooth it is being placed which results in unnoticeable restoration. Furthermore resin composite fillings are can be placed almost at any part of the tooth structure since they firmly bond to the tooth through bonding material that is placed between tooth and the filling material. At Richboro Dental Excellence we use various restorative techniques to address your dental filling needs. LATE POST #wellnessthursdays We all came across with cavities at some point in our lives. Our experiences may differ in terms of how bad consequences were. However, cause of cavities is same in every situation - bacteria. Our mouth contains whole ecosystem of various bacteria. Some of the bacteria more harmful than others. Those different types of bacteria are in constant competition for nutrition. Part of food we eat or soda we drink serves as a nutritional source for intr...aoral bacteria. That is why it is very important to have proper and regular oral hygiene. However, when there is no regular oral hygiene cavity causing bacteria get out of control and accumulate on parts of our teeth that are hard to clean and easy to stick on to. Through its activity bacteria colonies create specific chemical environment that softens enamel - hardest part of our teeth. If cavity is not addressed it will progress deeper into the tooth structure eventually approaching nerves causing more and more discomfort and pain. All of it is easy to avoid - just have regular professional cleanings and proper home hygiene. In your dental cleaning appointment your dentist will examine your teeth, X-rays and detect the cavities early before they cause any discomfort and treat it.
