Mike Gable's last day as Director of Pittsburgh's Department of Public Works is quickly approaching. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recaps his 47-year career working in city management, rising from a young city laborer to his current leadership position. Riverlife has worked with Mike and the Department of Public Works on numerous riverfront open space projects over the years. We thank him for his willingness to collaborate, insights into open space maintenance, and straight-shooting style. We appreciate our partnership with Mike and all he has done for our city's public parks and open spaces. Best of luck for the future, Mike!

Happy New Year! Close out 2020 with a tax-deductible gift to Riverlife and the future of Pittsburgh's riverfronts. Thank you for being an important part of Riverlife's community this year. Every email you read, every virtual event you attended, every dollar you generously donated -- all of these things propelled our work forward. Over 3,000 people participated in our Completing The Loop efforts this fall. In 2021, we'll be working hard on this initiative to expand and impro...ve Pittsburgh's riverfronts between the West End, Hot Metal, and 31st Street Bridges. Continue on this journey with us. We'll have exciting news to share and new ways to connect, building a movement of support for the city's riverfronts and driving innovation, equity, and sustainability in our region. We would love for you to show your support with your donation to Riverlife before the clock strikes midnight tonight. Let's work together to tackle the remaining gaps in Pittsburgh's riverfront network and make the riverfronts more welcoming to everyone in 2021. You can help bolster the downtown restaurant industry and provide meals for those experiencing food insecurity through Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership’s and 412 Food Rescue's collaborative project - the Downtown Community Takeout Program. With help from your donations, PDP is purchasing 1,225 meals per week from participating restaurants: Arepittas, Eadie’s Market and Catering, Harris Grill, Las Velas Mexican Restaurant, Proper Brick Oven & Tap Room, The Speckled Egg, The W...arren, Sly Fox Taphouse, and Wiener World Pittsburgh, to be distributed to individuals experiencing food insecurity. The COVID-19 crisis has created a rising food insecurity rate all over the country, in addition to its disproportionate impact on customers and sales in Downtown Pittsburgh restaurants. Your support is more appreciated than ever, as we work together to provide meals for those in need and save our favorite downtown eateries. Image via Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership

Say farewell to 2020 as a Riverlife supporter and have your donation doubled by our board members! Donate here! : https://secure.givelively.org/donate/riverlife We're doing one final push this year to raise $15,000 for Riverlife's work. And our board of directors is doubling your donation up to $15k starting now through December 31.... 2020 has been a challenging year for many. Riverlife's #CompletingTheLoop work to expand and improve Pittsburgh's riverfronts between the West End, Hot Metal, and 31st Street Bridges resonated throughout the community with particular clarity this year. "Pittsburgh's riverfronts are the best part of the city." "I'm grateful I could get out on my bike and escape my house." "I feel calmer when I'm next to the river." We heard from so many people that the city's riverfront parks and trails provided great relief during the pandemic. Over 4,000 of you participated in our Completing the Loop process, showing how valuable the future of the riverfronts is to you. Our board of directors--14 dedicated volunteers who, like you, care deeply about the potential of Pittsburgh's riverfronts--have issued a $15,000 matching challenge for all donors starting today through the end of this month. All donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $15,000 by December 31. We can't thank our board of directors enough for their generosity. We hope you'll consider joining them with your gift of any size right now. Let's work together to tackle the remaining gaps in Pittsburgh's riverfront network and make the riverfronts more welcoming to everyone in 2021. Photo by Maya Haptas, @shredyourfears via Instagram

ICYMI: Repair and repainting work is happening this weekend at the BLM mural site under the Ft. Duquesne Bridge between the Cultural District and the Point. It's part of a Riverlife and Office of Public Art Artist Residency with muralist Camerin "Camo" Nesbit. Over the coming months, Camo will lead a community engagement process with a team of artists to evolve the mural and look at the future of public art at the site. Improving Pittsburgh's riverfront experience happens in big steps and little steps alike. Check out this new safety gate coming to the Allegheny Landing boat dock, designed and made right here in Western PA! Allegheny Landing is the riverfront sculpture park located on the North Shore between the Clemente and Warhol bridges. The dock was destroyed by a major ice jam during the winter of 2018, and Riverlife and the Pittsburgh Public Works Department are working to make dockin...g at the park more resilient moving forward. The safety gate will add protection to the site while our planning and phased renovations continue. Metal fabrication was done by Technique Architectural Products based on LaQuatra Bonci Associates' renovation design for the park. which was approved by the Pittsburgh Art Commission earlier this year. The fabricator was chosen through Monmade's Creative Business Accelerator, which offers procurement of responsibly handmade and manufactured design from western Pennsylvania designers, artists, and craftspeople. The gate should be ready for installation soon!

Our region's aging sewer infrastructure, which includes combined storm and sanitary sewer outfalls that overflow into our rivers, is one of the biggest challenges to river health, safety and enjoyment. The City of Pittsburgh is seeking proposals to develop a five-year plan to manage the flow of stormwater and make our rivers cleaner. From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article: "[A Rand Corp. study released Monday] found that a centralized stormwater management system coupled with neighborhood level green infrastructure projects like bioswales, permeable pavement and stream daylighting is a cost-effective way to reduce sewer overflows and mitigate street flooding."
