Nutrient management can be complicated. These double crop beans had 5,000 gal of manure applied after triticale silage harvest to address potassium needs and use the farm’s manure. Past soil tests & plant analysis show increased need for sulfur in beans, so 100 lbs AMS was applied. With all that freenitrogen available to the beans it’s no wonder current nodulation levels are poor. Beans are great N scavengers and will only initiate nodulation when it’s advantageous to do so. As the manure/fertilizer N is used nodulation may increase to meet plant N demands.
