Meet Peach! Peach was gifted to the kids from their Pappy and named by Willow. They have their own little herd of cattle already and have already been building up their own bank accounts from cattle they’ve raised. ***The kiddos will privatley sell quarters of beef when Peach is fully raised. We promote our beef as Angus and are fully committed to honoring that.***
This past week we were thankful to be able to put one last cutting of hay away before winter. We’ve had some long days and short nights.
Whew! We had a busy day on the farm! Pregnancy check day for the mommas and weaning day for the calves. We also finished up our vaccination schedule for the year. Special thanks to Megan Myers for doing the ultrasound work on the cows.
We are doing a little upgrade to our cattle chute. While we worked on a few things the kiddos played cows. Guess on the farm it’s monkey see monkey do. I think Willow was being a little too realistic with placing Wren’s ear tag .
Our idea of prime day is some premium beef. Maybe a brisket, delmonico, NY strip, or one of the many other cute we have in stock.
Happy Farmer’s Day! Farming is 365 days a year rain or shine. It’s early mornings and late nights. It’s weekends and holidays. It’s exhausting and dirty work at times. It’s also exactly how we want to raise up our family. Our kiddos get first hand experience of hard work. They also get endless tractor rides, animal petting, wide open fields to run in, fresh air, muddy puddles, and all the dirt their little hearts desire to play in.
Freezers are full once again! Beef can be bought directly off the farm, at Bruce B Gamble & Son Feed & Supply, and at Snider’s Elevator.
Our friends at G&M Family Cattle currently have some sharp looking, docile calves to sell. If you’re in the market, hit them up.
What‘s everyone cooking this week? One of favorite cuts for busy evenings is chipped steak. It cooks up quickly and can become many dishes such as cheese steaks, fajitas, or even a steak and egg dish. Do you have a favorite recipe that uses chip steak? Let us know.
We got a good smile out of watching Willow and Wren move some cattle on their Pappy’s farm yesterday evening.
Harvest season continues as chopping has turned into combining keeping everyone extra busy these days. We normally wouldn’t have worked our cattle on a Sunday, but weaning day is soon approaching for our calves. Vaccines ideally are given prior to weaning to offer them the best chance to be effective prior to loosing all the extra goodies they get from nursing. We like to keep all of our cattle vaccinated in an effort to promote good herd health.
We’ve worked all week picking rocks in our newly planted pasture. We even had lots of helping hands from our friends at Foot of the Mountain Farm during one of our play dates. We are down to one last rock that Wren has been very worried about since we found it. This evening he dug it up and got it all ready for his Daddy to pick all on his own. Farming is such a rewarding way of life, but it’s hard work. I’m thankful we get to raise our kiddos up to learn this way of life and take pride in their hard work.
