Get ready for Halloween Pick a pumpkin at Rushland Ridge Vineyards Today 12-6pm Sunday 12-4pmGet ready for Halloween Pick a pumpkin at Rushland Ridge Vineyards Today 12-6pm Sunday 12-4pm
More from the "A grape is 85% water". These are Cabernet Franc grown by the good and kind folks at Rushland Ridge Vineyards & Winery in Jamison ... Bucks Count...y, Pa, USA. Just beautiful. Where the kind folks allowed my presence. I've always appreciated the wines in Southern France and the Basques areas of France. (Just plain liked the Basques folk from the start ... I smiled with pleasure and they did the same ... right back.) Cab Franc & Genache. I began with the Delaware River Aquifer 50 years back ... Sierra Club and Inquirer Magazine Cover Stories.... the free flowing Delaware ... as the Lenope Nation called it ...The Minisink. (Thank ya Joan Matheson 50 years ago. Good to have friends. (Remember seeing the movement in the River as a kid and being griped by a life force for the first time. How strong the flow in Americas free flowing river.) The Delaware and its Tributaries (not the least being the Lehigh) created the water for the farms my Dad and his Brother plowed behind mules the earth not far from this cottage which I shared with others for 40 years of its maybe 260 plus years. Like them, I'm passing thru hoping not to make a mess. Not take more than I give. But I've thought of this, all the years, I've worked food. Cranberries, Apples, Grapes ..table & wine. Uncle Carol worked his degrees (PhD. Md, BS) & Dad his BA and grad degrees both taught and returned home in the growing months to raise their crops Dad with 26 fruit trees, blue berries, grape arbors , a hundred foot square truck patch in which he grew all our food. Had the feeling the teaching made sense as the orchard and tons of produce could be grown in the proper time or year and climate. So for years, I left New York City, Bucks County, and Paris for Harvest season. The IBM labs and projects for harvest. California Dry Creek, Cranberries on Cape Cod, more berries It took years to understand. I saw Dad's hands harvesting and Mum's cooking providing. With that in mind flying into Boise I saw the lack of snow on the Rockies, the lack of water in the Snake River, the trouble on the Colorado enroute to California. And then home to the Delaware River Water Shed the Minisink. And home to Splinter Cottage where I raised 20 acres of Hard Wood. At least to offset the mess I made traveling so much by air. I began carrying American wine to my friends in France, often bringing East Coast Wines & West Coast Rice. Appreciated the good council of the French . They see food as education. Sophistication. Understanding of the World. Like cats. At a dinner with my friends the Faures where I brought an east coast Chambourcin . A gentleman who had vineyards, and became a friend M. Philip Pichat tasted the wine and replied: I have learned something. Of course, Pennsylvania is known for its agriculture why would there not be good wine? and that was the beginning of this education. Relevant now more than ever as our climate and water goes to hell. The Minisink is perhaps the best water shed in the world. So we live with a question of water the vines, my trees ...and my ground cellar. Water is THE QUESTION. h scott heist 21 / splintercottage.com This work is the property and creation of H. Scott Heist and rights are reserved.
