I’m a first-generation American, born to parents that immigrated to the United States from Nigeria. I am a peacemaker. But most importantly, I am a father. Som...e say that fatherlessness is one of the biggest issues affecting the black community, however Trayvon Martin had a father. Michael Brown had a father. Tamir Rice had a father. And countless other young African-American youth had fathers, yet they still lost their lives due to systems of oppression and racial injustice. Boys without fathers are more likely to drop out of school, struggle financially, become criminals, and end up in prison. I did none of those things, yet I was raised by a single mother. She raised 5 of us on her own in poverty stricken communities. Being raised without a father was only one of the many unfortunate circumstances that could have hindered my chances of survival and success. We absolutely need more men to step up and be good fathers, but we also need to dismantle systems of oppression and racially biased policies that prevent black boys from becoming men. We need better education and opportunities for employment so African-American youth don’t turn to crime as a means for survival. We need to bridge the gap between police and communities of color to reduce fear and increase empathy and respect on both sides. I’m committing the rest of my life’s work to creating mentorship programs for youth in underserved communities to become successful. I feel called to be a father to more than just my own children. Marginalized communities are in desperate need of fathers and leaders to help create the next generation of fathers and leaders. Happy Father’s Day! - Ken #FathersDay
