The umbilical cord contains 3 vessels. ... There are two arteries and one vein. A lot of people think it’s basically just a tube of sorts transporting nutrients to their baby. But, it’s so much more intricately designed than that! The vein carries oxygenated and nutrient-rich blood to your baby, and the arteries carry the deoxygenated blood, waste products (such as carbon dioxide), and nutrient-depleted blood through the placenta and into your bloodstream to dispose of. After delivery, these vessels close by themselves. The arteries close first due to their muscular walls. The umbilical vein follows closely behind, allowing oxygenated blood to return to your baby from the placenta. At birth, the placenta contains 1/3 of your baby’s blood volume. By delaying cord clamping for several minutes, you are allowing that blood to be transferred to your baby where it belongs via the umbilical vein. Do you recognize this picture? Is this a picture of you? This image from Pixar’s UP is a scene likely missed by most of its child viewers, but ripped the hear...ts out of every mother and father that has sat in a puddle of loss, a baby gone. October is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month. 1 in 4 women suffer from the loss of their baby through pregnancy, delivery, or infancy. There are likely SEVERAL women on your news feed who have suffered this loss. And you don’t know about it. We must end the stigma around miscarriage and infertility. We must share our stories so that others may come forward to share theirs. It’s time to shatter the silence. When a child loses his parent, they are called an orphan. When a spouse loses her or his partner, they are called a widow or widower. When parents lose their child, there isn’t a word to describe them. I see you. I hear you. I love you. I love your baby. Feel free to use this post to share your stories of loss, redemption, and to say your bab(ies) name(s). #shatterthesilence #miscarriage #fertilityjourney #pregnancyloss #infantloss #birthsupport #pregnancyafterloss #losssupport

I’m always in awe of this amazing organ and its abilities. Just when you think the placenta can’t get any cooler...... ... Did you know by studying the placenta, scientists are hoping to learn more about cancer. The placenta is able to develop in the body without being attacked by the immune system. By studying the placenta, researchers can learn more about how cancer has the ability to grow without an attack from the immune system, just like the placenta. And although the placenta develops inside the mother, the father actually helps to create the organ. When the sperm fertilizes the egg, a blastocyst is formed. This then becomes the placenta and the baby. The placenta is also not just a passive conduit from mother to fetus. It is able to respond to supply signals arising from the mother and demand signals emanating from the fetus. It is an organ that has many jobs, not just 1, unlike other organs. It provides blood, oxygen, nutrients, removes waste etc etc. It is THE ONLY ORGAN that we make that releases itself from the body once it’s job is done.
