Worship Message - July 4, 2021 - Messenger John Ries The very essence of the church includes helping the congregation, you and me, and the world to name and respond to God’s presence and power. Christian teaching seeks to help develop a sense of the meaning of life from the perspective of God’s unconditional love and God’s unremitting will for justice. https://youtu.be/JQBRTOPambc

At the heart of our Advent preparation and journey, stands John the Baptist, who calls us to repent and make a new beginning. As the darkness increases, we turn toward the light of Christ’s coming. For Christians, he is the root of Jesse, the righteous judge who welcomes all, especially the poor and meek of the earth. We wait for hope for that day when the wolf will dwell with the lamb, and they will all be led by a child: and there will be no more hurt or destruction. From the Lord’s table we are sent in the spirit of John the Baptist to proclaim that in Christ the kingdom of God has come near.

First Week of Advent To my sisters and brothers at Salem Hetzel’s, along with all who visit our Facebook page, There is little difference between hope and desperation. However, the space between them makes all the difference in the world. Entering the Advent season primarily in one mode or the other is the difference between awaiting the Messiah with patience and faith, or awaiting the Messiah with anxiety and uncertainty. It is quite likely, and with the activity of the h...oliday season, each one of us brings with us a substantial mix of each. During this season, in our worship and Advent devotional practices, we explore resources to dampen the desperation and fire up the sense of hope. And we put Christ at the center of it all. A brief explanation of the week, along with five prayers, will be posted each week. Since I am a week behind, you will get two sets this week. The prayers come from Lutheran and UCC sources, as well as other denominations. I hope you find them helpful on your journey through Advent. Peace and blessing to all who are on this journey through Advent: Not only my sisters and brothers at Salem Hetzel’s, but to the millions of Christians throughout the world who are on the journey with us. John Ries I include my phone number for one of my cell phones for your use in case there is an occasion during the holiday season you would like to contact me. 610-301-4848 First week in Advent The new church year began this past Sunday with the 1st Sunday of Advent. Advent begins with a wake-up call: Christ is coming soon! The readings challenge us to wake up from sleep, for we know neither the day nor the hour of the Lord’s coming. Isaiah proclaims the day when God will gather all people on the holy mountain and there will be no more war or suffering. Though we vigilantly watch for the promised day of salvation, we wait for what we already have: Christ comes among us this day as the word and strengthens our faith in the promises of God.
