Your little ones can slip into their pajamas and warm up with some hot chocolate as they’re entertained by the train conductor’s reading of The Polar Express. Santa and Mrs. Claus will then greet the kids and answer questions, like which reindeer loves candy canes, which likes to sneak cookies, and all the work Santa has to do to make sure the toys are ready for delivery. Saturday, December 26 9 a.m. Field House Would you like to participate in the oldest citizen science project in the Western Hemisphere, in the longest running wildlife census in the world? Join the Saucon Sanctuary Committee and ornithologist Brandon Swayser for the 2020 Christmas Bird Count. ... As we spend two hours walking our beautiful property, Brandon will help us identify and record the birds we see and hear, and you’ll learn more about the wildlife that surrounds you on the course. The Christmas Bird Count is more than a just great way to enjoy nature and have a lovely winter walk. The data we collect will join that of over 60,000 volunteer birders in 2,200 locations. Small count circles determine locations; the Club is in the Bethlehem-Hellertown count area, which is a 15-mile diameter circle with its center three-tenths of a mile from the Bethlehem city line. Scientists will use the information provided by the count to answer questions about how bird populations in one area change over time, called trend data. Observations from the count will also help determine how birds are responding to changing winter conditions. Even though the data is collected mainly by volunteers and not by ornithologists, every observation is a valuable contribution to a meaningful data set. It will be used to determine conservation efforts in our area in the future, and has made a tremendous impact on avian conservation science. The annual survey was one of America’s first conservation activities. In the later part of the 1800’s, bird populations were being decimated due to two factors. The millinery industry placed a high price on the heads of many birds, particularly the egret. Egret populations suffered so much, in fact, that the egret became the emblem for the National Audubon Society. In addition to pressure on bird populations from fashion, there existed a tradition called the Christmas Side Hunt. Hunters would compete to kill the most birds and mammals in one day. Troubled by easily observable declining bird populations, Frank Chapman, an ornithologist at Museum of Natural History, proposed the idea of a Christmas bird count as an alternative activity to the side hunt event. The first survey was conducted in 1900, and has provided a continent-wide snapshot of how birds have been faring ever since. Why not be a part of this great tradition? The more observers, the better all ages are welcome. We hope to see you at the Field House on December 26. Arrive at 8 a.m. for coffee, donuts and morning cocktails. Sign up via ForeTees or call the Front Desk at (610) 758-7150. Bring your binoculars!
