Federal Judge Grants Preliminary Approval to Landmark University of Michigan Class Action Settlement and Appoints Sauder Schelkopf LLC, Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP, and The Miller Law Firm, P.C. as Class Counsel

Sauder Schelkopf LLC, Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP, and Kairys, Rudovsky, Messing, Feinberg & Lin originally filed the federal lawsuit in Pennsylvania against Devereux and QualityHealth Staffing, LLC. The complaint detailed multiple allegations of abuse and other violations.

Sauder Schelkopf LLC, Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP, and The Miller Law Firm, P.C. have reached a class action settlement on behalf of UofM students and the University of Michigan that will lead to the creation and implementation of best-in-class, institutional reforms at UofM that address and prevent sexual misconduct, add transparency and new voices into the University’s response to sexual misconduct, and help ensure a safer campus environment.

Sauder Schelkopf and co-counsel filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of individuals who buried their loved ones at the Gethsemane Cemetery in Detroit, Michigan. On June 7, 2021, it was reported that Detroit police officers, FBI employees and others . . . began the grim task of digging up 20 gravesites where authorities believe bodies may have been mistakenly buried, based on complaints from families.

Today the University of Michigan's independent sex abuse investigation was released and it stated in part: "The University received contemporaneous information about Dr. Anderson’s misconduct from multiple sources. A senior University administrator was told about Dr. Anderson’s misconduct several times between 1978 or 1979 and 1981 but did not take appropriate action. Concerning information was also shared with other University personnel. Although the information these individuals received varied in directness and specificity, Dr. Anderson’s misconduct may have been detected earlier and brought to an end if they had considered, understood, investigated, or elevated what they heard." #umich #michigan You can read the full report here:

The American Lawyer named Joe Sauder to its 2021 Northeast Trailblazers. The list honors 60 lawyers who are truly agents of change. HARTFORD, Conn. The Hartford insurance company has agreed to pay the #BoyScouts of America $650 million for sexual abuse claims associated with The Hartford policies, most issued in the 1970s. "The agreement, entered into after extensive negotiations, contemplates that, in exchange for The Hartford’s payment, the BSA and its local councils will fully release The Hartford from any obligation under policies it issued to the #BSA and its local councils," wrote The Hartford in a news release.

According to the AP: "A former #OhioState University student health director has surrendered his medical license after being accused of failing to report several complaints in the mid-1990s about sexual misconduct by Richard Strauss, the university doctor now accused of abusing young men for two decades."

Sauder Schelkopf announces that the court has largely denied Allergan’s Motion to Dismiss. Sauder Schelkopf and co-counsel filed the first nationwide class action lawsuit to seek relief for breast implant patients due to the alleged increased risk of breast implant-associated anaplastic large lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) associated with Allergan #BIOCELL textured breast implants. As a result of the court’s ruling, the lawsuit will move forward with multiple claims.
