A few weeks ago, I presented a Continuing Legal Education class to the Montgomery County Bar Association titled Seniors and the Potential for Fraud. This class was an intersection of my past career of fifteen years as a financial/securities regulator and my present as an elder law attorney. While the class was aimed at attorneys and how they can help their clients, there are several takeaways for seniors and their families, or financial advisors that can help their senior clients. Most people do not want to be on life support. Most people do not want extraordinary measures taken when they are at the end stages of life, and are in a terminal illness. Most people have stated in their living wills they do not want to be on a ventilator or use other artificial means of support. However, that was pre-Covid 19. On April 2, 2020, the Pennsylvania Department of State announced a temporary suspension of its statute requirement that notaries be physically present when witnessing signatures specifically in relation to certain estate planning documents. During this uncertain time, I personally have felt at a loss as to how I could help my clients and those that need estate planning documents executed in a safe environment. On March 14th, I was supposed to join a panel discussion at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church (BMPC) to discuss "Living, Planning, Dying - Well: Getting Your Affairs in Order". Unfortunately, it had to be rescheduled to September due to the current situation with COVID 19. Since the panel discussion and presentation could not go forward as originally planned, I thought in the meantime, I could give a preview of what is to come in September. My entire business model is based on the concept of going to my clients. I go to nursing homes, I go to their homes, I meet in my office, or I'll meet them at Panera. I go where they are most comfortable. Unfortunately, that model is on hold for the near future. However, planning for the future cannot stop even though there are challenges with that as well. Miss Jay the supportive therapy basset was on hand for another visit to the skilled nursing facility. The amazing thing with pets and the elderly, or those with special needs, is that it really helps some people focus for a moment. A kiss from Miss Jay, or petting her, gives them something to concentrate on. I am by no means an expert in this area, nor is Miss Jay a trained therapy dog. But her visits have helped calm and focus individuals that I came to talk to and it’s a wonderful thing to watch. #therapybasset #elderlaw #saulinolaw

Estate Planning is actually you planning. It's not me planning or one size fits all planning. Its based on what you and your family want and need. Trusts are a common planning tool. Trusts sounds super fancy don't they? They must be for the wealthy and rich right? And what the heck is a trust anyway? All good questions. Trusts can be the proper tool a lot of different in situations. [ 424 more words ] http://saulinolaw.com/?p=286
