This original Singer model 20 toy sewing machine was perhaps my first to collect. I have always collected regular size machines, but 10-15 years ago a lady reached out to me to donate a machine to my collection. She knew that I had old machines sitting around my store for people to enjoy; people who would enjoy these more than anywhere else locally. She asked if I would like her machine and if I’d like to come to her home (that she was leaving to go to a retirement home) to g...et this machine. Sure, I said. When I went to visit her, I sat and talked with a wonderful old soul who was kind and had a lifetime of memories to share with a stranger over a cup of tea and 30 minutes of my time. She spoke of her childhood, her wonderful marriage, her children and her future where her entire lifetime was being stuffed into a 1000 square foot apartment. What I remember about this visit was simply a kind soul. She explained that this was her first sewing machine that she received when she was six years old. The day I met her, she was 86 years old. The condition of the machine was that it was used, but more importantly that it was treasured. What I experienced was a moment that can’t be explained or taught. It is a moment that we all need to simply experience. It is moments such as this that I feel, regardless of the pressures and constraints of the outside world, that all people should experience not once, but often and always. My fondest memories growing up were spending time with my grandma Sneeringer. She too was a kind old soul. She was beloved by everyone she met. Folks that had no relation to her even called her Grandma Sneeringer. Why do I bring this up? Because this one moment with this nice old gal who was giving me her toy sewing machine reminded me of my grandma who died years before at the age of 93. Today, I look at my first toy sewing machine and remember my grandma. This is the best reason to have a collection. Things like these are truly connections to our past. Maybe this is why I have over 300 toy sewing machines. See more

Today, I wanted to take a break from talking about and showcasing my antique sewing machines to let you all know that I actually have reconditioned several really nice old machines for you to start your own collection. Most of these are great machines to not only collect but they also sew great. These machines are updated to LED lighting, have had wiring replaced if needed and mechanically adjusted to factory settings. All of these machines I would expect to only go up in value. I currently have a Singer 301a (big brother to the Singer Featherweight), a Singer 99k, a great old Domestic sewing machine and a Singer crinkle coat model 66. All machines come with a 6 month warranty!

The Davis Vertical Feed sewing machine was quite a unique machine. It didn’t have the traditional Feed Dogs to pull the fabric but rather had an upper walking foot and the needle would swing in the fabric to pull the fabric as it was forming a stitch. This is actually quite common on many industrial machines today as this type of mechanism allows a machine to feed far heavier fabrics than a standard sewing machine. Davis was so successful early on with the sewing machine bu...siness that they diversified their business and actually began manufacturing bicycles too which led to them to eventually getting out of the sewing machine business. Kind of ironic as during this year’s early moments of the current pandemic, the top 2 items that exploded in sales were bicycles (taking the number one position) and sewing machines (taking second place). Though this machine is not the most beautiful or unique, it was truly ahead of its time technologically which is why it has earned its place as a favorite in my collection. I am a sewing machine technician after all, so of course innovation in mechanical design is a big deal! See more

This New National model hand crank sewing machine was made by the New Home sewing machine company. This company was founded with an initial start up investment of $350, 3 employees and a 100 square foot shop. The company grew through the late 1800’s until 1918 when major stock purchase in a furniture company (to accommodate their need for sewing machine cabinets) created more hardship for the company than they could endure. This led them to be taken over by Free Sewing Mach...ine Company who manufactured under the New Home name. Today, we know New Home by a different name. Janome sewing machine company of Japan has owned and developed New Home machines for a very long time now. Janome also has manufactured machines such as Kenmore and more recently Necchi Sewing Machines. They currently also own the Elna Sewing Machine Company (remember - the cute Grasshopper sewing machine?!) Personally, I always loved hand crank machines. I think the mechanism for operating these machines always adds a bit of interest that is missing from treadle models. This one drew my eye due to the great balance of curves and lines blended with the delicate filigrees. See more

The Prize was made by the White Sewing Machine Company. White became a powerhouse of a company who after years of successful business practices, went on to obtain such brands as Philco, Gibson and Kelvinator. Later they even established the purchase of Westinghouse’s appliance divisions (thus the new name White-Westinghouse). As with many great successes, they themselves became a prize that another company would be thrilled to add to their portfolio. This came to pass as t...hey were purchased by the hugely successful Swedish giant Electrolux. At one point, Husqvarna Viking (another Swedish Brand) was owned by Electrolux and thus the partnership of Husqvarna Viking and White as part of the same company was established. Husqvarna Viking is now part of the company SVP Worldwide which represents the brands Singer, Viking and Pfaff. I believe the white brand is still owned by SVP but there hasn’t been any manufacturing of the White brand name since 2006. Though it is sad that this brand has died, they fared far better than their early competition. In fact, in the early days of the sewing machine industry, literally hundreds of sewing machine companies came into existence then disappeared or were merged with other companies. Being such as small niche industry, no brand truly dies. A brand after all is simply ideas and people who put forth their efforts for the world. These people in this industry, have endured even when their brand dies. When this has happened, these pioneers join their brothers and sisters who were former competitors and they bring a new richness to those brands. It is akin to when Singer closed thousands of stores leaving thousands without jobs. Though there are fewer than there once were, there are always old Singer people who own stores, who work for the other brands or who have forged the path for future generations. I am in fact, the son of a Singer Man! See more
