Great day at the Zoo celebrating with Shriners Hospital for Children of Philadelphia and the 6th Annual Walk for Love!! I am so proud of our lodge and the incredible support we have provided to the Hospital. We have been fortunate enough to offer many large donations over the past few years and today the lodge became an official sponsor of the Walk!!! Thank you to all who attend and keep up the good work as we continue to help the Shriners kids and their families! Also a special thanks to Brother Dennis Gold for his continued support. #shrinershospitalsforchildren
While much of The Masonic Temple in Philadelphia's stained-glass is purely decorative, the second-floor window - particularly the top portion shown here - is al...so symbolic. Benjamin H. Shoemaker designed and constructed the entire window during the building's initial construction in the late 1800s. Some of the most commonly-known Masonic symbols are represented within. See more
In many Masonic organizations, the presiding officer goes through a special installation ceremony. Sometimes this takes the form of a whole degree, with passwor...ds, signs, grips, etc. Hence, these ceremonies have become known as "chair degrees" because they are only conferred upon those who sit in the presiding officer's chair. Shown here is the presiding officer's chair in the East of the Colonial Room at the Grand Lodge of the State of New York Free & Accepted Masons in Lower Manhattan. The Great Seal of the United States, depicted on the back of the $1 bill, has often been attributed to some vast Masonic conspiracy. Historians have debunked th...ese claims many times. Conspiracy theorists point to the latin inscription "Novus Ordo Seclorum" as being a nod to a vast "New World Order." Except when translated that isn't what the phrase means. "Seclorum" is Latin contraction that more accurately translates as meaning "time" or "age." A more precise meaning of the Latin phrase is "New Order of the Ages." Happy 33rd anniversary to Past Master and secretary Howard Glickman and his wife Shelly.
The Grand Master's collar with its five-pointed stars is a familiar sight to Pennsylvania Freemasons. However, did you know that it used to be decorated with se...ven-pointed stars? This symbol represents the seven liberal arts circa the Middle Ages: geometry, astronomy, arithmetic, music, grammar, logic and rhetoric. The switch from seven to five points happened in 1871, with no explanation given for the change. See more
Even though the The Masonic Temple in Philadelphia is the The Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, F & AM headquarters, did you know other states are represented in the building's decor? See some of these state symbols below.
Chief Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea) is the first known Native American Freemason. A Mowhawk, Brant served as the principal chief of the Six Nations. He joined Hi...ram's Cliftonian Lodge No. 447, London, England, in 1776. Following the Revolutionary War, Bro. Brant moved to Ontario, Canada, where he served as Worshipful Master of his Lodge in 1798. (Source: American Freemasons: Three Centuries of Building Communities by Mark Tabbert.) See more
It was not uncommon to see a Masonic flag flying from a mast when sailing ships were the primary means of transport and trade. Captains of vessels who were Free...masons would hoist such a flag upon entering port as an invitation for Masons in the port to board for an informal Masonic meeting, to hear the latest Masonic news, and possibly trade. You can think of it as the equivalent of posting Masonic news here on Facebook today! The painting shown here depicts the ship Bark Lincoln arriving in Smyra, Turkey, July 4, 1853 (courtesy of the National Heritage Museum.) The Masonic Temple in Philadelphia's Egyptian Hall is renowned for its distinctive coloring and detailed interior design. But, the room didn't always look this ...way. When Brother George Herzog, Philadelphia Lodge No. 51, redid the room in 1888, he added the detail work that Egyptologists still study today. Compare the design renderings with the final result! The Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, F & AM's warrant of constitution is one of the most important Masonic artifacts that the The Masonic Temple in Philadelphia possesses in their collection. Further restoration will keep this relic of Pennsylvania's Masonic history around for years to come!
