Carrots are an excellent source of Vitamin A, which is a crucial nutrient for healthy vision. Some people worry about the sugar in carrots, but carrots are actually a low sugar food. October food of the Month - Butternut Squash!! As the weather turns chilly, winter squashes take center stage! These hearty vegetables have a long shelf life and before modern refrigeration were a staple that helped feed people through the cold winter months. Butternut squashes are long and pale in color (pictured above), have a sweet flavor similar to pumpkin and sweet potato, and taste great roasted both in salads or alone as a side dish. They also make a colorful, healt...hy addition to any chili or soup and are an excellent source of Vitamin A. The recipe below for roasted butternut squash was featured at Spectrum’s Plant Based Nutrition Class and our participants loved it! United Healthcare and Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania hosted a citywide baby shower event. Patients received raffle drawing, games, and prizes. Vendors offered free health care resources materials. Patients who registered and attended received gift bags , healthy snacks and refreshments. Free health screenings and health education workshops for mom’s , dad’s and the expected bundle of joy. 200 people attended this free event and the first 25 families who registered received items for their babies ie. Cribs, strollers, pampers, and bottles.

Colon Cancer Screening When should you get checked if no one in your family has had colon cancer? Blacks should get screened starting at 45 years old. Everyone else would start at 50 years old and stop at 75 years old. What do I do to check if I have colon cancer? Talk to your doctor about your 5 choices:... 1. Stool/poop sample. At home you collect a small stool/poop sample and mail it to the lab. You do this test every 1 year. The names of the different types are gFOBT, FIT, or FIT-DNA test. 2. CAT SCAN of your colon. You will get pictures taken of your belly (abdomen). You do this every 5 years. 3. The mini colonoscopy. A small hose is put into your buttocks (anus), and the first few inches of your colon is looked at. Any bumps are removed to stop cancer from growing. You do this every 5 years. 4. Colonoscopy. A small hose is put into your buttocks (anus) and the colon is looked at. Any bumps are removed to stop cancer from growing. You do this every 10 years. If someone in your family that has colon cancer you should get checked 10 years before the age they were when they found out. For example, if your dad found out he had colon cancer at 52 years old, you should get checked at 42 years old. Don’t get colon cancer. Eat more fish, chicken or turkey. Exercise. Get your extra weight off. Eat good fats like olive oil. Don’t eat very many hot dogs, deli meats, ham, sausage, corn beef, canned meat, beef jerky. Ask your doctor if you need a cholesterol medication (statin). What you might feel: Nothing Your poop (stool) might change. It might be skinny, or loose, or you might be constipated. You might feel like you have to go poop (have a bowel movement). That does not go away with going poop (stool). Blood in your poop (stool). Pink, red, brown, or black. Belly pains. Losing weight. Feeling weak or tired.

It’s an excellent time to reflect on your current health habits and set goals for improvement if needed! ... Did you know that less than 15% of Americans meet the recommendation for fruit intake? While 1 to 2 cups are recommended, a majority of Americans are falling short. Apples, which are in season in Pennsylvania now through the end of October, are a low cost, convenient way to add an extra serving of fruit to your day! One medium apple is the equivalent of one cup and makes a great lunchbox snack or salad topping. They can also be used to add natural sweetness to breakfast items such as yogurt, hot cereal, pancakes, and waffles. Try buying in bulk (for example the bag of apples instead of the individual ones) to get the most apples for your dollar!
