Expensive Lesson Learned: When the business ends or legal structure is changing due to illness, divorce, retirement or passing of a partner or member of the business you must do the following to protect yourself: 1. Close all the credit cards immediately. 2. Establish credit in your own name before you close the business if at all possible. 3. Ask and demand if necessary those in possession of credit cards to return them immediately! 4. Inform the bank/credit card com...pany of those who are not authorized to use the cards. 5. Talk to your lawyer immediately and make sure you are talking all the correct and necessary legal steps. If you do not do this you may be unpleasantly surprised at who continues to use the companies credit and what it will cost you. If the card is in the business names you are most likely still responsible for the debt...especially if you have not taken the above steps. See more
