The Silver Eye 2020 Annual Fund is taking place now! Our Annual Fund brings the creativity, connection, and thoughtful discourse which fuel our exhibitions + programs to life, and helps us to support the emerging and under recognized artists we are so lucky to work with. Join us tonight at 5:30 EST for the last Thinking Through Photographs meeting of the year. Our fourth meeting will be facilitated by artist Zora J Murff, Assistant Professor of Photography at the University of Arkansas, and will use Mark Sealy's Decolonizing the Camera: Photography in Racial Time, (2019), and Dora Apel's, Torture Culture: Lynching Photographs and the Images of Abu Ghraib, (2005) as tools to consider the violence that photographic images can contain, incite or record.

Silver Eye is excited to announce that the long-awaited Radial Survey catalogue is here! Designed by Studio Elana Schlenker, and made possible in part through generous funding from The Henry John Simonds Foundation, this new publication celebrates the inaugural exhibition of this biennial survey, which took place in the spring of 2019 and explores the creative and talented artists working in contemporary photography in a 300 mile radius around Pittsburgh. The catalog feature...s an in depth look at the work of all the Radial Survey artists: Nando Alvarez Perez, Morgan Ashcom, Nydia Blas, Melissa Catanese, Brendan George Ko, Jacob Koestler, Eva O'Leary, Lydia Panas, Ahndraya Parlato, Jared Thorne, Corine Vermeulen, and Susan Worsham. The catalogue also contains several essays on some of the larger themes the exhibition explored. Anna Lee, Curator of Photography at the Columbus Museum of Art muses on the ways in which stories and personal narratives are constructed; Jessica Beck, Milton Fine Curator of Art at The Andy Warhol Museum, writes about the many complexities of identity the exhibition contained, and Ashley McNelis, former curatorial assistant at the Carnegie Museum of Art, looks to questions about the future of this region. Poet Miranda Mellis provides a moment of thoughtful prose, and Silver Eye Board Member Leo Hsu offers a poignant introduction to the project as a whole, as well as a touching postscript written after the exhibition had closed. Limited copies are for sale through our shop: https://silvereye.org/shop/radial-survey-exhibition-catalog

As part of our ongoing series, "The Lab Presents", new work from The Lab @ Silver Eye member Sue Abramson, is now on view. During what has proved to be an unpredictable and unprecedented moment in time, it feels fitting in many ways that Sue Abramson would choose cicadas as the subjects of her latest body of work. Taking the genus of this unusual insect as the title of her project, "Magicicada" is the story of one artist's quest to photograph an event that had been on her min...d for 17 long years, and the fits, starts, triumphs and failures which unfolded along the way. Image: Sue Abramson, "Magicicada #3", 2020, gelatin silver prints with graphite Four of these beautiful prints are on view at Silver Eye through December 31st as a part of our series, "The Lab Presents" celebrates the Lab @ Silver Eye Member Artists, providing a space for their work to be engaged with by our community.

Our latest Studio Visits w/ Silver Eye conversation features Melbourne based artist Zoë Croggon, speaking about why she’s so fascinated with photographs of athletes, what she’s learned about the women of the Bauhaus, and just how much work it takes to make a composition look effortless. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuO_tG8F4-Y&t=5s
