Six years ago today, Adam and Charlie, the co-creators of this piece, lost their dear brother Joey to this epidemic. We take a moment today to remember him. To honor his memory. Without shame. Without fear. Without anger. But with joy and compassion and understanding and empathy and a promise. A promise to keep fighting.... Fighting for him and all of the others. The ones we've lost and the ones who have been left behind. Fighting to end this. Fighting for their memories. Fighting for justice. See more

Incredibly grateful to Cry It Out Director @tamanyag for putting together this amazing resource in honor of #intlmotherartistday with @paaltheatre and @phillywomenstheatrefest Posted @withregram @paaltheatre Are you ready?!? It’s BACK!!!! #IntlMotherArtistDay is this Sunday on August 2nd, PAAL and PWTF invite you to #amplifyBIPOCmamas!! Share your own photo and story, or a BIPOC womxn you admire using #IntlMotherArtistDay! Tag @PAALTheatre and @PhillyWomensTheatreFest, a...nd we will re-post on our social media platforms. In 2020, PAAL & PWTF are turning our attention to the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous & Person of Color) mother-artists of the world. We encourage theatres, families, friends, colleagues, communities and the BIPOC mother-artists themselves to share a photo of themself or a BIPOC mother-artist who inspires them, using the hashtag #IntlMotherartistDay. These womxn and caregivers not only navigate the world of parenting and art-making, but they also face barriers that white parents do not, like pay inequality, being left out of child and healthcare decisions that disproportionately impact them, lack of representation in the companies and nonprofits they work within, and a lack of representation in their industries. Learn more about these barriers and the annual campaign at the link in our bio! HUGE thank you PAAL Chief Rep of Philadelphia @tamanyag Tamanya Garza for the idea to authentically honor the experience of BIPOC mamas by focusing on both the joy of being a mother artist and the very real barriers faced by the community. ... PAAL is a transgender and non-binary affirming organization. The term mother, mama, women and their derivatives apply inclusively and supportively to all who identify with the terms.

Small organizations with budgets under $250,000 have been hardest hit by the impact relative to their annual financial figures. In three months, they incurred losses relative to 20%-30% of annual revenue and incurred unanticipated expenses equivalent to about 20% of annual expenses. Though it occurred after the survey period for this study closed, the killing of George Floyd by a Minnesota police officer set off national waves of protest which further highlighted that communi...ties of color, and African American and Black people in particular, were dealing with the public health crisis compounded by centuries of entrenched racism. Of the cultural organizations surveyed for this report, 9.5% state they primarily serve culturally specific audiences, so examining the impact on their organizational health is key to making sure these groups are able to recover from and support their communities through the multipronged crisis. Feeling grateful and humbled by the conversation reflected in the notes attached. AD Allison Heishman has been participating in weekly conversations with artistic leadership in the theatre community. The notes from our last meeting feature the voices of many BIPOC artists, who have for too long gone unheard and unheeded. Additional thanks to Faith Jones-Jackson and Amy Smith, as well as Alice Yorke and John Jarboe for their work to make this conversation and these notes possible and available. We have work to do in order to heal and grow, and we are committing to doing that work, centering BIPOC voices onstage and off.
