If you’ve ever driven by our shop on East Afton Avenue, you may have noticed this landmark at the intersection of East Afton Avenue and River Road. While it now features a veterans memorial, this was once the location of the Yardley Wilburtha Bridge that connected Yardley to the Wilburtha section of Ewing Township, New Jersey. The first incarnation of this bridge was a 903-foot wooden toll bridge built in 1835 when Yardley was still called Yardleyville. However, misfortun...e struck five years later when the bridge was damaged in a flood in 1903. It was rebuilt as a steel Warren-truss bridge by the Yardleyville Delaware Bridge Company and was profitable for more than 50 years. In 1955, the steel bridge was swept away after the back-to-back devastation of Hurricanes Connie and Diane. The bad luck continued when its replacement was damaged two years later in 1957 after yet another flood. The Great Yardley Duck Race is returning! On Saturday, June 9th at 4:00 PM, hundreds of yellow rubber duckies can be seen floating along the canal tow path on the Delaware Canal in Yardley.
