In honor of Valentine’s Day, we are taking a look at the story behind Ye Olde Pepper Candy Companie, which has been operating in Massachusetts since 1806. Around the turn of the 20th century, George Burkinshaw purchased the George W. Pepper Companie and the recipes for two of the most popular candies at the time: Salem Gibralters and Blackjacks. George successfully ran the business with his wife, Alice, for years. When George’s health began to deteriorate, he became distraug...ht that his business would die with him. George’s son, George Jr., made a small batch of candies and took them to the hospital to prove that he could carry on the legacy. The business is now celebrating its 4th generation of candy makers, and their Blackjack sticks and Salem Gibralters are still sold today. #OnThisDay February 10, 1763, representatives from Great Britain, France, Spain, and Portugal signed the Treaty of Paris to formally end the Seven Years’ War, a...lso known as the French and Indian War in North America. With this Treaty, France and Spain returned territories conquered during the war, and France ceded its holding from the Mississippi River to the Appalachian Mountains to Great Britain. While this victory was a success for the Thirteen Colonies and Great Britain in the short-term, additional taxation on the colonies to pay for war expenses and prohibitions against colonists to expand westward led to rifts that eventually boiled over into the Revolutionary War. In 1768, Samuel Ball, a Philadelphia merchant and speculator, purchased 15 acres of land at the intersection of Kings Road and Maryland Road. The area would later become Smyrna, Delaware. These roads straddled the boundary between what was then known as Gravesend and Sherwood’s Fortune. Ball realized that this location had great sales potential because of its proximity to popular trade routes. By 1790, the settlement, known as Duck Creek Cross Roads, was thriving and containe...d more residents than Dover. The town increased in popularity into the late eighteenth century, as local grain merchants grew more prosperous. It was these wealthy merchants who constructed many of the Federal mansions in the historic district. The district is also ripe with late-high-Victorian dwellings, like the c. 1890 Samuel Reynolds House: https://bit.ly/3oYYNsd. In 1806, the state legislature changed the name of Duck Creek Cross Roads to Smyrna. There are two theories about the name origin. Some say the name stems from a popular Turkish grain port. Others believe that the name was inspired by a sermon delivered by Methodist preacher Francis Asbury about St. John’s letter to the church in Smyrna, Turkey.
