Did you know? Samuel Langley was an astronomer, who realized that power was needed to help man fly. He built a model of a plane, which he called an aerodrome, that included a steam-powered engine. In 1891, his model flew for 3/4s of a mile before running out of fuel. Langley received a $50,000 grant to build a full sized aerodrome. It was too heavy to fly and it crashed. He was very disappointed. He gave up trying to fly. His major contributions to flight involved attempts at adding a power plant to a glider. He was also well known as the director of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC
Did you know? Elizabeth "Bessie" Coleman: In 1922, when Coleman was 23 years old, a time of both gender and racial discrimination, Coleman broke barrier and became the world's first black woman to earn a pilot's license. Because flying schools in the United States denied her entry, she took it upon herself to learn French and move to France to achieve her goal. After only seven months, Coleman earned her license from France's well known Caudron Brother's School of Aviation. Though she wanted to start a flying school for African Americans when she retured to the U.S., Coleman specialized in stunt flying and parachuting, and earned a living barnstorming and performing aerial tricks. In 1922, she became the first African-American woman in America to make a public flight.
For National Aviation History Month we are going to post a fun fact about Aviation! Did you know: One of the earliest flying schools was established in 1910 by Orville and Wilbur Wright in Alabama, at the current site of Maxwell Air Force Base. They quickly moved operations to their hometown of Dayton, Ohio, at Huffman Prairie Flying Field. Notable students included: Henry H. "Hap" Arnold; Thomas DeWitt Milling; John Rodgers; and his cousin, Calbraith Perry Rodgers. In the ph...oto attached we can see pilots (left to right) Henry H. "Hap" Arnold, John Rodgers, and Thomas Dewitt Milling pose together (in civilian clothes) at the Wright School, Dayton, Ohio, 1911. The photo is from the National Air and Space Museum website!
Did you know that November is National Aviation History Month? According to the Government Printing Office, National Aviation History Month is dedicated to exploring, recognizing and celebrating America’s great contributions and achievements in the development of aviation. Aviation history refers to the history of development of mechanical flight from the earliest attempts in kites and gliders to powered heavier-than-air, supersonic and space flights. https://www.census.gov//stori/aviation-history-month.html.
