SHM Announces Opposition to Proposed Changes to J-1 Visa Structure SHM Sends Letter to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) SHM is strongly opposed to a recent proposal by the DHS to eliminate the duration of status standard associated with the J-1 visa and replace it with a fixed time period. Outlined in the letter, immigrant hospitalists are an essential part of the hospital medicine workforce who provide lifesaving medical care to hospitalized patients around the... country. We urge a modification to the rule to explicitly exclude foreign national physicians and trainees who participate in the Department of State’s Exchange Visitor Program in J-1 Visa status.
