If these walls could talk, what might they say? Laurel Arts' Dressler Center was built in 1832 by Major Joseph Imhoff on property owned by Peter Ankeny, one of Somerset's early settlers. The building was also known as "The Edgewood Summer Resort," which served as a summer getaway for Pittsburgh residents traveling to the Laurel Highlands. ... Rumor has it that the center even had a hand in the Underground Railroad. In 1975, the property was graciously donated to be used as an arts center by Dorothy Dressler, in memory of her late husband, Philip Dressler (inventor of the tunnel kiln). The Dressler Center has no doubt seen the passing of time, people and the changing of scenery around it, but one thing that will never change is its rich historical and captivating beauty; a place where we are fortunate to call home and share its majestic vibrance with the community.
