ALERT The Fed just cut the fed funds rate to almost 0. PLEASE do not confuse the short term fed funds rates with mortgage interest rates. They are not directly correlated - mortgage rates are driven by the MBS markets.... This is uncharted waters and mortgage rates may RISE or FALL depending on how the market interprets this. YES, the Federal Reserve cut interest rates to near zero today. This affects the interest rates banks use to lend money to each other, which in turn lowers short-term interest rates (think credit card and HELOC interest rates) and increases interest rates on savings accounts, CDs, etc. NO, mortgage interest rates are not near zero; however, they are still historically low.
