Many have asked how to target striped bass in the fall and spring AT NIGHT in New Jersey’s backwaters.....fast moving water and lit up bridges is a great way to start. Whichever spot you go to, You’ll need to fish an entire tide (I would start with 2 hours before incoming/outgoing, the slack tide, and the two hours after outgoing/incoming tides. This will give you an opportunity to figure out when the fish feed in that area...if you can catch more of each tide you increase ...your chances of getting a better understanding of their feeding time in that area). Jig Weight will be determined by the tide, and you should always remember to use whatever jig weight will get you near the bottom BUT still moving with the tide. Always try to put your bait in the strike zone (shadow lines, rock piles, bridge pilings), reeling as slow as possible! Plastic paddle tails and finesse plastics work best when fishing with a jig head on the bottom. When fishing plugs and top water, you want to cast over your target area and allow the plug to swing through the current giving you maximum play on tour plug. Some spend days and weeks fishing a certain area trying to find out when that MAGICAL time of tide is best. Got a few nice fish this past weekend, working the low to high tide in about 20ft of water near a bridge fishing a shadow line. 1.5 oz jig with a 7 inch finesse plastic (pink z man this time). Even for the experienced anglers, a plan to fish striped Bass is never a for sure catch, and sometimes the hunt to find fish is more important than what baits are being thrown.
