The apparition in County Mayo in Ireland of Our Lady of Knock is reported to have occurred on the evening of August 21, 1879, the vigil of the octave of the feast of the Assumption. The apparition was described as follows: Our Lady was wearing a large, brilliant crown and clothed in white garments. On her right was Saint Joseph, his head inclined toward her and on her left Saint John the Evangelist. To the left of Saint John was an altar on which stood a cross and a lamb. S...tanding only a few feet off the ground, the Blessed Virgin wore a white cloak and was described by witnesses as being incredibly beautiful. She wore a bright golden crown and appeared to be praying with her eyes looking toward heaven with her arms bend in front of her with her palms facing inward. Fifteen parishioners stood to witness the apparition for two hours as they recited the rosary. She did not speak, but the gable of the church where she appeared was covered with a cloud of light. PRAYER: Great Mary, Greatest of Marys, Greatest of Women, Mother of Eternal Glory, Mother of the Golden Light, Honor of the Sky, Temple of the Divinity, Fountain of the Gardens, Serence as the Moon, Bright as the Sun, Garden Enclosed, Temple of the Living God, Light of Nazareth, Beauty of the World, Queen of Life, Ladder of Heaven, Mother of God. Mary’s promise to an early Carmelite, Saint Simon Stock, was Whoever dies invested with this Scapular shall be preserved from the eternal flames. It is a sign of salvation, a sure safeguard in danger, a pledge of peace and of my special protection until the end of the ages. All Catholic faithful can be vested in the Scapular. Any priest can invest you in the Brown Scapular. There is a formula of investiture that the priest performs. The Brown Scapular is the habit of the ...Carmelite Order. It takes the form of two long, undecorated panels of brown cloth joined at the shoulders and falling, one to the front and one to the back. For the laity it takes the form of two smaller pieces of brown or dark cloth, preferably plain, joined over the shoulder by ribbons, and falling, one to the back, the other to the front. PRAYER: O most blessed and Immaculate Virgin, ornament and beauty of Mount Carmel, thou who beholdest with thy special kindness those who wear thy blessed Scapular, look lovingly upon me, and cover me with the mantle of thy motherly protection. Fortify my weakness with thy power, enlighten the darkness of my understanding with thy wisdom, increase Faith, Hope and Charity in me, adorn my soul with the graces and virtues that will make me pleasing to thee and thy Divine Son. Assist me during my life, and console me at the hour of my death and present me to the most blessed Trinity as thy devoted servant, to praise and bless thee in heaven forever. Amen.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel appeared to Saint Simon Stock, a leader of the Carmelites, and gave him a scapular, telling him to share the devotion. The scapular is a modified version of Mary’s own garment. It symbolizes her special protection and calls the wearers to consecrate themselves to her in a special way. The scapular reminds us of the call to prayer and penance. The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is July 16th. The novena to Our Lady begins on July 8th. PRAYER: Thou ...who, with special mercy, look upon those clothed in thy beloved Habit, cast a glance of pity upon me. Fortify my weakness with thy strength; enlighten the darkness of my mind with thy wisdom; increase my faith, hope and charity.
