St Matthews Roman Catholic Church 09.05.2022

A Reflection for the 6th Sunday of Easter Saint Augustine, in the opening chapter of his classic work, Confessions, wrote, Our hearts are restless, O Lord, until they rest in You. Everyone has a different idea about what happiness is. For example, Josephine Boyle of Sommerville, New Jersey won 11 million dollars playing the lottery and gave it all away. Happiness is having fun, feeling good. Happiness is having an endless supply of money. It is being able to travel, play go...lf, lie on the beach, never having to work, having beautiful features, an attractive personality, a great marriage. The list goes on. All such answers measure happiness by the world’s standards as though happiness were the pot at the end of the rainbow. If this is the peace we seek, we are going to be filled with one disappointment after another. If you ever take the time to read about the lives of the saints, you will find that they were very practical-minded people. They knew what would give them peace and what wouldn’t. There is a story of a PREP teacher, Kathy Mullin, telling the class of youngsters about the happiness that awaits all of us in heaven. Everyone will get a crown of glory for good deeds, for faith, and for avoiding sin. At the end of the lesson, the teacher asked who would get the biggest crown? Silence for a few moments, then one child, Dennis Boyle, raised his hand and said, The one with the biggest head. Saints don’t have big heads. They had their feet on the ground. They knew that the real source of true happiness and peace was their relationship with Jesus Christ. The things of this world can bring much happiness and satisfaction, but they have no power to satisfy the deepest longings of our hearts. Jesus calls us away from confusion, doubt and fear. He invites us to begin tasting on earth the things of heaven and to begin living the life of heaven now. How? By focusing on our relationship with Him. We still bask in the brightness of the Easter candle. Let us take that flame of hope deep within us. We are part of that light and its warmth has the power to dispel whatever darkness we have allowed to live within us. The Lord has risen and so can we rise from fear, confusion and stress by accepting His peace, a peace that the world cannot give. In Corde Christi, Fr. Tom

A Reflection for the 5th Sunday of Easter In what is known as the Farewell Discourse of St. John’s Gospel, part of which we heard in today’s Gospel, we find Jesus very concerned about the future of His disciples. He had spent a great deal of time during His last days on earth preparing them for a time when He would no longer be with them....Continue reading
