Sterling Stoneworks & Restoration 09.05.2022

So, its been a minute since Ive posted any projects...thought you might like to see our latest. :) 1841 Federalist style house in Bellefonte - received a rebuild of the front parapets. Failing brick coping course was removed as well as the corbel course below it. Corbel was relaid (STRAIGHT :) ) and the new coping was PA bluestone capped with copper. LOTS of damage from improper mortar mixes used over the years, and gernerally terrible repairs. All work was re-laid with historically appropriate lime mortar mix. The original mix was likely an earth mortar, which was found in the verrrrry center of the work. The building has been fully repointed once, probably around the turn of the century. Enjoy. :)

COVID-19 Update ~ Construction in PA is set to open May 1st and we will begin work again on May 5th. Per state guidelines, Nathan and I have compiled a Safety Plan, which includes (among other requirements and additions) masks on site, hand washing stations, and the use of electronic documents / payments. Our safety plan will be available for public view on our website, www.sterling-stoneworks.com For the safety of our existing and future clients, we will conduct all inital... estimate requests remotely as much as possible. Please send us photos and a description of your project to [email protected]. I'll get back to you to go over your submission. These electronic estimates will be FREE ~ any projects that require a site visit will cost our usual $40. We are mindful for everyone's safety during these challenging times. Please feel free to contact me with any concerns or questions. We know that people's needs might be different this season, so dont hesitate to reach out. :) We would love to help you add to or maintain your outdoor space, perform needed house maintenance, or design a custom project! You can check out examples of our work on our website or Facebook page. (Instagram coming soon!) Be well. ~Maria

Out of an abundance of caution as well as concern for all our clients, we are now offering all estimates & proposal meetings via FaceTime or conference call, and all contracts can be signed electronically, if you prefer. We will make site visits as necessary to assess projects. If you have any unusual requests for work, well, these are unusual times, so dont hesitate to ask. We have a wide ranging skill set and deep toolbox and can address most residential repair issues, inside or out. A long-time client once called us in the middle of the night because she had a burst pipe & didnt know who else to call, and we went out that night to help her. Be well & lets take care of each other.

You know whats NOT repairable? "Maintenance Free" items such as replacement windows, vinyl siding, PVC fencing / railings and composite materials like TREX. When (not ) they break or wear out, you are forced to BUY NEW. (Good luck finding that exact brand / style for replacement years later.) Also, these materials have NO PROVISION FOR END OF LIFE RECYCLING. Yup, straight to landfill. They may be made of "recycled" materials, but they are now NOT RECYCLABLE because of their mixed materials makeup. So youve just pushed the problem off onto the next generation of people, under the guise of "using recycled materials" or "being green". NOTHING is maintenance-free. This is a trick of language used to sell PRODUCT. Support craftspeople and sustainable materials instead!

Here are the final pics from the Victorian Porch Reconstruction we just completed in Bellefonte. Some of the things we installed included: Sapele mahogany floors, tongue & groove beadboard ceilings, custom fabricated brackets & details, solid wood posts, copper gutters, standing seam roofing, and functional cedar shutters with operable period hardware. We also installed mahogany flooring and drywalled the ceiling in the vestibule area. The entire porch build took Nathan an...d I about four months from start to finish. We learned a lot and are grateful for the opportunity to build this recreated beauty ~ we're also very thankful to have such incredible clients that had faith in us and the project, and with whom we could work closely to bring their dream into reality. Id like to make a quick thanks to Shuttercraft for the shutters, Heister House Millworks, Inc. for the mahogany flooring, Nature's Cover for the stone, Old House Guy LLC for the paint color recommendations, Porter Brothers Paint for the flooring stain & guidance, and Triangle Building Supplies in Bellefonte for much of the remaining materials. :) We could not have built this without all of you! :)
