Wildlife Wednesday American Mink Last week at Susquehanna Outfitters we had a very cool visitor: an American mink. Although this member of the weasel family appears cute and cuddly, it is a really a fierce carnivore with sharp teeth. They will eat fish, crustaceans, rodents, amphibians, and even birds. Their streamlined shape helps them swim more efficiently. Fun fact: Mink can swim for 3 hours straight! ... Check out the mink we caught on video!

Wildlife Wednesday Eastern Painted Turtle This turtle is the most widespread native turtle species across North America! The painted turtle can be identified by the olive to black, smooth carapace (top shell) and the yellow plastron (bottom shell). These turtles have yellow, orange, or red stripes on the legs. This turtle has a distinctive head with only yellow stripes and one stripe and spot behind each eye. Painted turtles are commonly seen basking on logs along our local w...aterways. They are omnivores and feast on algae, crustaceans, fish, insects, etc. These remarkable turtles can live up to 55 years! Can you find the painted turtles in this picture? #wildlifewednesday #kayakinginpa #paintedturtle #turtles #yellowbreeches
Wildlife Wednesday Scorpion Wasp These little guys may look threatening but this female cannot sting. She uses her ovipositor to lay eggs on other bugs as a host for her babies to eat! Their common names include ichneumon fly and scorpion wasp, though they're related to neither flies nor scorpions. They look wasp-ish, and they are in the Order Hymenoptera, but they are in the Family Ichneumonidae rather than being grouped with the familiar stinging wasps.... #Wasps #scorpionwasp #respectwildlife #wildlifewednesday #pawildlife

Fun Fact Friday Did you know that Susquehanna Outfitters was founded in 2005?! Steve Oliphant and Jill Miller started the business which was first located on City Island. They enjoyed spending time in the outdoors and wanted to provide the opportunity for others to enjoy it as well. Over 15 years later, we are still going strong and continue to carry out their vision. ... #susquehannaoutfitters #harrisburg #outdoors #kayakinginpa #smallbusiness #pennsylvania
Wildlife Wednesday Northern Water Snake Northern water snakes are commonly found in the water or sunning themselves nearby. They never stray more than 200-300 yards from water (Virginia Herpetological Society). These non-venomous snakes are commonly mistaken as copperheads (which are venomous). ... There are a few ways to tell the difference. First, copperheads have a triangular shaped head. Next, these snakes are also far less common in our area so snakes that you see are more likely to be water snakes. Lastly, their patterns are slightly different. Water snakes have a bulb shaped pattern (left image) that widens in the middle and copperheads have an hourglass pattern (right image) [photo credit: John White/Virginia Herpetological Society]. Snakes are frequently killed out of fear. But as with all wildlife: show respect and keep your distance and they will respect you. Venomous or not all snakes fill an important role in the ecosystem! Check out our resident water snakes in this photo! #snakes #northernwatersnake #respectwildlife #wildlifewednesday #pawildlife
