During the month of December, we will be featuring one of our SWHS Music Department alumni each day. Today we are pleased to recognize Mr. Marcus Harris, a 201...1 graduate of the SWHS Music Department who was a percussionist in many bands and orchestras in his time at SWHS, as well as a member of the Marching Band Leadership Team as drumline captain and Band President. Marcus currently resides in Austin, Texas where he's completing his master degree in business administration at the University of Texas. After leaving South Western in 2011, his music journey continued at the University of Virginia, where he proudly marched on the drumline as a quad player. After graduating in 2015, he started his career in government, consulting for federal agencies before taking the leap to join the Peace Corps supporting college and career readiness education in the beautiful country of North Macedonia. Marcus says his favorite memory was performing the 50th anniversary marching band show in 2009. At the time, it was the first musical performance that incorporated the South Western Alma Mater into the repertoire. The students performed that show with such passion and pride, and it was hard to not leave the field without chills. The South Western Music Department provided Marcus with his first-ever leadership experience. As Drumline captain, he learned that respect from your fellow musicians does not come automatically with a change of title. Respect as a leader is earned, never given. These early lessons from high school will always be lifelong lessons in leadership. Marcus wants the current SWHS music students to Be daring! High school is a great place to find your own style and personality without major consequence. In the working world, small slip ups in judgement or leadership can lead to fairly harsh outcomes. However, high school is a safe space to reach out of your comfort zone for the first time with little to no consequence. So be daring, take a chance, and develop a few lifelong lessons along the way. We are so proud of Marcus and all of our alumni! We missed yesterday, so you’re getting two features today! During the month of December, we will be featuring one of our SWHS Music Department alumni each day. ... Today we are pleased to recognize Mr. Hayden Milam, a 2014 graduate of the SWHS Music Department who was a tuba player, percussionist, and vocalist in many of the bands and choirs in his time at SWHS. After graduating Hayden attended Shippensburg University where he continued participating in the marching band, concert choir, and musical productions. He earned a degree in Political Science and is now a J.D candidate at the Rutgers University School of Law pursuing a career in corporate/securities law. When asked about his favorite memories from the SWHS Music Department, Hayden says One of my most memorable memories from my time at SWHS was being able to play Erronius in "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Forum". I remember being disappointed with the role at first but it ended up being my all time favorite role. A couple of my other favorite memories from my time at SWHS include going to NYC every year with Singchronicity, performing at MiniThon with Extreme Measures, and winning two championships with the marching band. Hayden says, The SWHS Music Department prepared me for my future in so many ways and taught me several invaluable lessons. One of the famous phrases that was always said that sticks in my mind to this day is "to be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late, and to be late is unacceptable". While it seemed so arbitrary at the time this is an ideal that I still hold very valuable and hold myself to in all matters of my life to this date. The SWHS Music Department also prepared me by teaching me about leadership, teamwork, hard-work, and time management. Hayden wants the current SWHS music students to know, Don't take this time for granted. These are some of the best years of your life and there may come a time where you may not be able to sing with a choir or play in a band or orchestra every day. Enjoy it to the fullest extent and cherish the friendships you have made through these groups. Additionally, I would advise to step outside of your comfort zones and audition for other ensembles within the Music Department. We are so proud of Hayden and all of our alumni! To our SWSD families, Today was cold & windy handing meals out at curbside this afternoon. Jade & I head in from the last time this year, little frozen and little upset from all the meals not picked up to open this card that was given to us this afternoon. Any frustration or negative thoughts were gone after reading the kind words from Olivia & Caleb, this card absolutely made our day! We try to know each family and remember names from March of this year.... even though they ...trick us by getting a new car, coming in a different car or straightening their hair to make them unrecognizable even when you see this person daily- makes us double check or look strange or even ask for a name. We hear good things happening, stories from our students, good and bad, hear items they love in the lunches, and even check to make sure they are doing their work. We also got to know many parents that share same things as our students or we are the ones they interact with during this difficult year. Thanks to my amazing crew of head cooks packing the meals each week (Betsy Bonnie, Dawn, Deb, Kim, Sarah, Sue) & Jade for doing handouts each week in all of the elements and breaking down meals not claimed. Thank you to the parents, family friends and grandparents for coming each week and sitting in the line and the neighbors for picking up meals for neighbors and or friends. I wish all of you a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year. Enjoy the break with family and friends. See you January 5, 2021 for our next curbside pickup. Stay well, Crystal #SouthWesternSD #swhsmustangs #BaresvilleElem #ManheimVikings #ParkHillsPacker #WestManheimElem #EHMMS_colts See more
