Gone are the days of stress-free Trick or Treating! There are so many variables to keeping this fun yearly tradition safe for our children. This year we have the added stress of COVID-19 to the list of potential dangers while trick-or-treating. If you and the children in your life plan on trick or treating this year keep these safety precautions in mind from the Derry Township Police Department Facebook Page: ... Did anyone ever tell you driving in the autumn can be just as challenging as driving in the winter? There may be snow and ice in the winter, but most drivers are prepared for those hazards and are aware of when the weather exceeds their driving skills. Autumn driving has a variety of factors that may seem easy to overcome but present a major challenge to many driving. Though the US has the highest accident rate of any other country in the world, Pennsylvania drivers rank 36 ...out of 50. Stay out of Mississippi and Texas though! Here are 9 factors that contribute to autumn accident numbers increasing. 1. KIDS back to school-watch those busses and the kids getting on and off them. Stay alert of the flashing lights and STOP when the busses do! 2. DARKNESS- Daylight Savings Time happens in the fall and suddenly everyone driving home from work is doing it in the dark. 50% of accidents happen right after twilight in the fall. 3. CRITTERS- It's hunting season and all of a sudden there are a lot of humans scaring critters out of the woods onto the roads. 4. LEAVES- fallen leaves create a false cover on roads much like ice. It is very difficult to quickly stop a car on a sheet of wet fallen leaves. 5. TIRES- the temperature dropping and raising all day everyday changes how your tires handle on the road. Maintenance and awareness are key. 6. DAMPNESS- speaking of changes in temperature, the moisture those changes make often leave a layer of moisture on all the surfaces including leaves and roads. 7. GLARE- as the sun drops lower to the horizon it creates a glare off of buildings and structures often during rush hour time frames. 8. FOG and FROST- we all know how these two items can impair our vision while driving. 9. INEXPERIENCE- autumn brings a lot of variety to driving hazards and drivers need experience in driving safely which each type. Learn the risk factors, pay attention and adapt as an effort to reduce the chances of autumn driving mishaps.
