Today is a day of volunteering, if you can, but at the very least, a day of reckoning that honors the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We reflect on one of the many wisdoms he so valiantly expressed. And the great danger facing us today is not so much the atomic bomb that was created by physical science. Not so much that atomic bomb that you can put in an aeroplane and drop on the heads of hundreds and thousands of peopleas dangerous as that is. But the real danger co...nfronting civilization today is that atomic bomb which lies in the hearts and souls of men, capable of exploding into the vilest of hate and into the most damaging selfishness. That’s the atomic bomb that we’ve got to fear today... It has taken us some days to process and comment on the disturbing events of last week in Washington, D.C. More so, we continue to be concerned about the ongoing reports of threats of still more violence and riot threats. The level of violence, disregard for the law, and disrespect for a process that had been legally challenged and refuted was unprecedented. Once again, these are evidence of the deep disparity, inequalities, and divisions in our society, significantly based... on skin color, that this last year has brought to a new level of realization. But, we are also heartened as we recognize the efforts of those elected officials that overcame the dangerous circumstances and returned to their respective chambers to discharge the duties of their positions: completing, certifying, and thus reinforcing the democratic process. We are still deeply troubled by the fragility and volatility of this situation. As we are fearful of the next few days and weeks, we want to publicly join our voice to reinforce the values and principles of democracy and for our commitment to a more just and unbiased society.

This upcoming Saturday, October 31st from 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm NPRA will be coordinating a non-partisan Get out to vote caravan throughout North Philadelphia! The caravan will end up at 4th & Lehigh at 4:30 pm with a BomVotazo (Bomba & Plena players) and food for those participating on the Caravan! There will be a class: Spanish for families of students that participate in the ESOL Program. This workshop will explain "What does it mean to be an English Learner?" and offer ideas on what families can do at home to support English language acquisition without discarding Spanish. This session will stress the value of what the student brings to the classroom, and how the student's previous knowledge complements and supports the learning of another language. (Zoom details a...re included in the flyer below.) And yes, it will be held on Election Day, so that parents and students can participate. (Please, exercise your right to vote!) The session will be recorded and will be available for those who cannot join us live.
