Blossom, a black bear, wondering what we are doing. You might be wondering what she is doing wide awake. Our captive black bears will usually take that long winter's nap starting when they are around 4 or 5 years old. In the wild, cubs will stay with their mother for 2-3 years and they learn that behavior from watching and following her. If the winter is mild, black bears in the wild may wake up from time to time and wander outside their dens and/or take care of their cubs, too. Don't worry, Blossom will be denning up soon, especially now that the weather is a little colder.
