A team of #TempleMed researchers led by Dr. Cherie Erkmen recently received a two-year, $400,000 award from the American Cancer Society and Pfizer Global Medical Grants to continue their work aimed at breaking down race-related barriers that contribute specifically to disparities in #lungcancer screening and cancer care. Only 10 cancer-focused programs across the country were awarded ACS/Pfizer grants, out of more than 120 applicants. Unfortunately, only about 3-6 percent of... Black and African Americans who are eligible for screening are actually being screened, even though screening can reduce the risk of lung cancer death by 20-26 percent. Many people, especially in underserved communities, do not take advantage of this life-saving process due to a lack of resources to navigate the multiple steps of lung cancer screening," said Dr. Erkmen. New from our #NarrativeMedicine program: an interview with Temple's Dr. Susan Gersh on practicing internal medicine during #COVID19 from Leah Goldberg, #TempleMed student. "Even this interview for me is an outlet to acknowledge how hard this is. Having people to listen and validate the struggle helps. This is hard for everyone, so it’s difficult for people to listen because everyone is struggling. So, to be that person who can be there and listen to how brutal this is, is important," said Dr. Gersh. Read more: https://bit.ly/3nlq5sM

A team of #TempleMed researchers led by Drs. Konstantinos Drosatos and Nina Gentile recently received a $750,000 grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences to further investigate the link between a molecule known as B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and severe sepsis. The research could lead to the discovery of new therapies to increase blood pressure and improve survival in septic patients. Read more: https://bit.ly/2HksBzG #TempleMedResearch

In 1912, Agnes Berry Montier graduated with high honors and was the first Black woman to earn a medical degree from Temple. The University's founder, Russell Conwell, opened Temple's medical department in 1901 and allowed all academically qualified students to enroll regardless of ethnicity, gender, race or religion. Congratulations to #TempleMed's Dr. Henry Parkman on his investiture into the Stanley H. Lorber Chair in Gastroenterology! It is with pleasure that I accept the Stanley Lorber Research Endowment Fund and Chair in Gastroenterology at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple. I have had many mentors that have tremendously helped me to get to the position I am today. What’s important now for me in the Stanley Lorber Chair and Research Foundation, will be the transition for ...me, that is, for me to help mentor others. Although this year's Homecoming looks different than years past, #TempleMed's Alumni Office is carrying on the celebration with the launch of a new program designed to bring Alumni and students together. Developed in partnership with the Office of Student Affairs, the Alumni-Student Connections program aligns Alumni engagement with our medical students from building a foundation of support in year one, to providing a platform for in-depth discussions and mentoring opportunities in year four. Get to know our student group, the Latino Medical Student Association - Temple Chapter (LMSA) who are also the Northeast LMSA Chapter of the Month: "We're excited to share that we have seen tremendous growth over the last few years. We currently have a twelve-member Executive Board of second-year #TempleMed students, as well as our Chief Faculty Adviser, Dr. Ana M. Gamero. This past year, our chapter implemented a tripartite mission focusing on: increasing the pipeline of Lat...inx students applying/entering medical school, improving the academic experience for current LKSOM Latinx medical students, and expanding Temple’s community service outreach in Philadelphia. We look forward to connecting with our community and are hopeful that future #TempleMed classes will continue to foster this new-found spirit within the LKSOM Latinx community!" "My fiancé Mitchell and I first met when we partnered up in anatomy lab in the #TempleMed PA program. Our first year of dating consisted of nothing but studying in our apartments. We got engaged this July, and we hope to get married in 2022! We both chose to be PAs because of the flexibility of the profession, and the ability to care for a variety of patients. I chose to stay at Temple after graduating because I love the atmosphere and helping the underserved population that we work with. After the pandemic hit, I was part of the higher acuity COVID care team and I don’t think Temple could have handled the number of patients without our service being involved." - Brianna Sanguily, PA-C, #TempleMed Physician Assistant Inaugural Class #PAWeek #PAsAreEssential #NationalPAWeek
