Thaddeus Stevens, who lived in Gettysburg from 1816 to 1842, died today 149 years ago at midnight in Washington, D.C. He laid in state in the Capitol Rotunda, guarded by a African American color guard. He was only the third person to be so honored after Henry Clay and Abraham Lincoln. His funeral in Lancaster, PA was attended by 20,000 people, half of them African Americans. His epitaph reads: I repose in this quiet and secluded spot, not from any natural preference for solitude, but finding other cemeteries limited as to race by charter rules, I have chosen this that I might illustrate in my death the principles which I advocated through a long life: The Equality of Man Before His Creator.
Happy Happy Birthday to Thaddeus Stevens!
Getting ready to spread some holiday cheer with a family from New Zealand this weekend! Merry Christmas
