Today we are highlighting Volunteers Joyce and Lizzie, If you have been to the museum in the past 2 seasons you may have spoken to them in the Mercantile or School House. Joyce has shared a project she is working on with us. Pinballs were 18th century pincushions that women would wear. They were attached to clothing via a chain or ribbon and would hang from a woman's waist. Pins were important for women since they were used to fasten clothing as well as for sewing. Pinballs ...could be knitted or needlepoint and were gifted as a sign of friendship. I’ve been working on a knitted pinball for my daughter, Lizzy. My daughter and I volunteer at Depreciation Lands because we enjoy sharing the 18th century with others. Understanding history and how things have changed over time helps us understand the changing world we face today. It also helps us appreciate how much has not changed like the importance of family and friends.
After the Holidays we will be starting a new series of posts. Hopefully it will be each week. Last summer while we were closed several of us enjoyed presenting, guess this item, receipts and history trivia. This winter we will be featuring one of our most valuable assets at the museum- our volunteers! Many of us work on our skills ad well as learning new skills to bring to our demonstrations. Stat tuned.
A wonderful day to call a close to this season with our volunteer dinner. A big thank you to all of the volunteers that make the museum the awesome place it is. We also want to thank all of our patrons that supported us during this crazy year. Your support keeps us motivated to bring you the 18th century.

What’s happening this week? Coming this Sunday, October 4 - Logging to Lumber Meet Doug Plance and learn about the importance the Timber Industry played in early America, and the tools that were used. When England discovered the wealth of White Pine in American, she claimed it for ship spars. As the Iron industry started, hardwoods were cut and burned for charcoal. Pitch products were harvested for Navel Stores, and Hemlock bark was ground into tanic acid for treating leather.
