"Untitled", photo collage, by Janice Moore. She shares: "This is a photo collage I created by layering 3 of my photographs in Photoshop. I was able to erase areas from top layers to let some of the imagery from the layer underneath show through. I have done several of these and have enjoyed the process." #ThrowbackThursday: Repost and special thanks to The Illustration Department for this shout out to our founder, Emily Sartain, who engraved this piece. A few times a week, I post stories about people in illustration, graphic design, animation, and other creative fields. In recent posts, I’ve mentioned women artists who were members of The Plastic Club. Today, let’s talk about its founder: Emily Sartain.... Sartain was born on March 17, 1841, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her father, John, was a master printer. Her mother was (the amazingly named) Susannah Longmate Swaine Sartain. John and Susannah believed in equal opportunity for women, and in supporting the arts. Fourof eightchildren became artists. John was credited for popularizing the mezzotint technique in the United States. Sartain also studied painting and engraving with Christian Schusselewho designed the American Medal of Honor. While attending the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, she metand later had a romantic relationship withthe renowned Thomas Eakins. Due to his promiscuity, she ended the relationship. They remained friends, however. After returning from a years-long journey around Europe (with Mary Cassatt!), Sartain established her studio in Philadelphia. She became the first woman to practice mezzotint in the United States. She constantly exhibited her work won (normally male-dominated) awards and art edited politically and socially conscious newspapers. In 1897, Sartainan established, national authority on art educationfounded The Plastic Cluba women’s only club that supported women artists. Its mission was to help members find career opportunities. They also provided seminars, open drawing, and more. Plastic referred to ever-in-progress works of art. Sartain lived in a time when women were seen as amateurs. Shealong with friends including Violet Oakley and Jessie Wilcox Smithproved them wrong. If you’re ever in Philadelphia, head over to 247 South Camac Street. There you will find The (still active, now co-ed) Plastic Club. Bring a sketchbook. Giuseppe (Additional info from pafa.org) #Illustration #IllusDept #ArtHistory #womenofillustration
