Congratulations to the Tinicum Township Board of Commissioners, The Lazaretto Preservation Association of Tinicum Township, Vitetta Architects, and, as David Barnes said in his acceptance speech the hundreds of volunteers, who all played their part to ensure that the c.1799 Lazaretto will stand for present and future generations as an example of early American medical treatment of disease and an aviation site that began in aviations earliest beginning to it's present role as a seaplane base.

Preliminary report from the excavations done by Dr Richard Veit and his students at the 1799 Lazaretto on 10 October 2015 "This Saturday's dig was the most interesting yet. We dug two three-foot square excavation units and have a better understanding of what is going on at the site. Both were behind, on the Northeast side, of the structure. Essentially there is a layer of 20th century machine shop waste on top of a brick pavement, made of machine-made bricks, probably dati...ng from the late 19th or early 20th century. Underneath the paving is a pretty rich deposit of early 19th century artifacts. This deposit includes lots of tobacco pipes, fragments of several redware chamber pots, and personal items--a gunflint, a weight for making change--it is for a Guinea and a half, and buttons. We even found a button from the first Artillery Regiment in the War of 1812. This deposit lies over a thick deposit of broken stone and bricks--apparently rubble from construction of the Lazaretto itself, and under this, about 2.5 feet down is the original ground surface with a clear plowzone. Under that is the original silty island soil. It is pretty amazing to have such clear stratigraphy and the archaeological deposits are very good." Some Delaware County locations received 8+ inches of rain yesterday and parts of our region are still recovering from flood damage. In 1843 the residents of Delaware County were taken by surprise by two stormfronts that intersected over Springfield, PA, dropping 14 inches of rain. Darby Creek swelled to 17 feet above normal levels; Chester Creek reached 21 feet above normal. The storm destroyed bridges, mills and house, and resulted in the deaths of 19 people. ...
