The Everett Area High School football game scheduled for tonight has been canceled and 11 players and three coaches are being quarantined because a coach is showing COVID-19 symptoms. Superintendent Dr. Danny Webb said the football coach is showing severe symptoms, including a high fever. His COVID-19 test results were not available as of Thursday afternoon. The varsity football game scheduled at Claysburg has been canceled, as was the junior varsity game scheduled for Mond...ay. Practices have been canceled until further notice. We didn’t feel it was fair to move on with competition, Webb said. It was not a popular decision, but we’re going to lean on the side of safety. The district was notified about the coach’s symptoms on Thursday morning. Webb said contact tracing was done for the past two days, and the district identified 11 players who were in close contact. If the coach is determined to have COVID-19, each of the players will continue to be quarantined for 10-14 days, Webb said. It’s not the first time a local sports team has been sidelined due to coronavirus concerns. The Bedford High School girl’s soccer team had a player test positive last week, which resulted in 28 close-contact cases who needed to be quarantined. The Everett varsity football game that was scheduled to be against Southern Huntingdon County High School last week also was canceled due to a positive COVID-19 test in that district. The incidents accompany the rising number of COVID-19 cases across Bedford County. The state Department of Health reported 11 new cases in the county on Thursday. The county has had 76 new cases since Oct. 10. Everett Area has had one positive COVID-19 case within the district this year. Webb said it was a staff member, not a student. The district is operating with a hybrid schedule in which students alternate week-to-week between online and in-person learning to help mitigate the spread of the virus.

A spectacular fire late Friday destroyed a vacant motel in Fulton County. Units from four counties were called to the former Days Inn just off Old Route 126 at the Town Hill exit of Interstate 70, about 9 miles south of Breezewood. Flames from the burning motel could be seen for miles as firefighters responded to the 10:40 p.m. alarm. Lack of water severely hampered responders; all water had to be carried in by tanker. Assisting Breezewood firefighters at the scene were units... from Everett, Bedford, Southern Cove and Needmore in Pennsylvania and Hancock, Clear Spring and Orleans from Maryland. The 64-room motel has been closed since around 2013. Crews were still at the scene as of 3 a.m. See more
