Philly Gay Lawyer 11.12.2020

Today is the day. While we likely won't have a clear winner by the end of the night, we are ALL winners for having gotten this far. Join myself and State Representative Brian Sims today @ 12pm as we discuss the importance Pennsylvania will play in this election and go over early voting details and polls. #VOTE #BidenHarris2020 #wegotthis

I’ll be going LIVE today @ 12pm with John Culhane, a professor of Constitutional Law and LGBTQ law to answer questions relating to the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, solidifying a conservative court for an entire generation. Everyone has questions about what the future holds and while it’s unclear, the one thing everyone can do is be as educated as possible about how to protect ourselves, our families, and our community and who better to do that wi...th than a law professor! Join John and myself at 12pm today and if you haven’t already, submit your question here or you can do so live in the comments: https://forms.gle/hneRZkG96Sn7VNbU7

I'll be going live tomorrow @ 12pm and every Tuesday thereafter up to and through the election (and likely more often based on the amount of questions we've received!) answering your questions. We'll discuss things you can do to protect your families, the appointment of Amy Coney Barrett, the upcoming election and whatever else you may have questions about. I'm being joined by Gregg Schoenberg, the Co-Founder of Vote Him Out - a nonprofit aptly named after its mission!

Happy Independence-ish Day everyone! While we may be light on our liberties, let’s celebrate how we have come together as a human community (most of us anyways) in the last couple of months. And if nothing else, it’s SaturGAY!

Happy SaturGAY!

Thankfully The George Washington University Law School believes in the Rule of Law and in doing so has called for the resignation and censure of William Barr. William Barr received his JD from GW in 1977 and has since served on its board of advisors, and has previously been honored by the school. Despite that, Eighty Percent (80%) of the active full-time faculty with voting privileges signed the letter calling for his resignation, in addition to 18 emeritus professors, deans,... and legal professionals AND most importantly, the signers include members of both major political parties, and of none. This is a crazy world we live in but rule of law will see us through. Happy WednesGAY #LOWbarr #georgewashington #williambarr #resign #ruleoflaw

This is us after one full week of not being able to be fired for being LGBTQ - Happy FriGAY! #newnormal #protected #lgbtq #equalrights

Still in jubilant disbelief that SCOTUS voted 6-3 to provide federal protections for LGBTQ employees nationwide holding that sexual orientation and gender identity is included in the protected class of sex. With all the roll backs in our rights in the last 3 years, let alone in the last two weeks - this restores some faith in the rule of law and the judiciary. #thankyou #scotus #lgbtqrights #gayrights #transrights #humanrights #equalrights #righttowork #FINALLY

After so many roll backs in our rights we finally get a win and the BIGGEST win at that! At issue: the text of the 1964 Civil Rights Act barring employment discrimination based on sex, and whether that term should be understood to include sexual orientation and gender identity. 28 states, including the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, have little or no workplace protections for the LGBT community. About 4.5% of the U.S. population, or roughly 11 million people, identify as lesbi...an, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer; 88% of them are employed. Today, in a landmark ruling, SCOTUS held that LGBTQ people ARE protected from discrimination pursuant to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964! Yaaaaay for us - we can get married AND go to work! The decision was written by none other than Justice Neil Gorsuch, President Donald Trump's first nominee to the court and was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and the court's four liberal justices. Yet another landmark ruling during Pride month - Happy MonGAY everyone!!!

Equality Florida Executive Director Nadine Smith said, "[t]here's a pattern of police restraint against white suspects, and zero when the person you're dealing with is black." "The issue really comes down to this: Did the police seek to apprehend someone, or did they simply open fire because they concluded that Tony's life didn't matter?" Just two days after the murder of George Floyd, McDade's death is believed to be at least the 12th violent death of a transgender or gender nonconforming person so far this year and the 3rd fatal police shooting in Tallahassee, FL in 2 months.

I won’t be posting my normal daily briefings for the time being because these aren’t normal times. With that said, today I’m speaking directly to my white audience and addressing how we can be in solidarity with the black community: - DON’T pass judgement about the protests and riots that are taking place - it is not our place to tell others how to express outrage. Today is the start of Pride Month and the first Pride Parade was a riot. Remember that. - VOTE tomorrow...PLE...ASE. We must do everything we can to have a changing of the guard come November. - DONATE. Every uprising (including the LGBTQ’s) requires funding so please consider donating to Minneasota Freedom Fund which pays for criminal bail and immigration bonds for people arrested for protesting. Consider the Black Visions Collective which is Black/Trans/Queer led aimed at dismantling systems of oppression and violence. Lastly and more locally, the Philadelphia Bail Fund which provides relief for protestors in the area with the longterm goal of ending cash-bail in Philly (all links in comments). #BlackLivesMatter.

Cheers to Queers on this FriGAY! First, of course, we have to discuss the Orange Blob and his fight with Twitter - which will now spiral into a tirade of litigation. The Executive Order is baseless and everything that ensues will be a colassal waste of time. In happier news, New Zealand just discharge their last coronavirus patient and Ford has come up with a very unique way to protect first responders.... Today’s life hack flips the script on the age old maxim no pain, no gain. What if that weren’t true? What if your abundance level didn’t have to match effort exuded but instead you abundance was achieved effortlessly and with ease?! Enjoy the weekend and see you Monday to kick off Gay Pride month!
